Our documentary is entered for an award. It has already won the Sunrise Award at the Films for a Better World in Munich. It is both gentle and hard hitting as we have tried to show the dignity of poor people in India and Africa, how their lives can be transformed by locally led development, the questionable state of how a $250bn aid industry is organised. Nobody wants handouts, it’s not in human nature, in my opinion, to just sit there and wait for handouts from the west or from your government…” says Adeso’s Executive Director Degan Ali in We Don’t Do Charity. 💙 Watch the full session: We Don't Do Charity Documentary Screening & Panel Discussion: https://lnkd.in/dVmSigWq 🗣️ We Don’t Do Charity is a short thought-provoking documentary hosted by Catalyst 2030 that is keen on dissecting and evaluating current systems of aid and how we can shift the power to grow locally led development in a sustainable way. The film featured several local organisations that empower their local communities that explained that their driving force comes from a deep desire to change destitute living conditions of their communities. It insists that the role of international aid needs to be redefined so that its beneficiaries do not end up becoming victims of charity. However it also emphasises the importance of documenting local development alternatives and show that they work. The 30 min think piece was followed by an intricate panel discussion with Alan Braithwaite, Executive Producer of We Don’t Do Charity, Anshu Gupta from Goonj, Nkunzurwanda Olivier  from Refugee Innovation Centre and Ayesha F. from Comic Relief.

🌎Celebrating the Launch of the Permanent Latin American Forum for the Decolonization of Cooperation ✨ Earlier this month, over 200 participants—including social organizations, academics, INGOs, and donors from 21 countries—came together to launch the Permanent Latin American Forum for the Decolonization of Cooperation. This landmark initiative, sparked powerful dialogue and collective action toward a decolonized future. We are grateful to the #PledgeSignatories who were able to attend and we kindly ask INGOs to make greater resources available to support the movement. We are thrilled to see Acápacá and Asier Hernando Malax-Echevarria who is a part of the Pledge Compass Group leading the Forum's secretariat. 🌍 “As local as possible and as international as necessary” 🌍 This statement is central to the highly anticipated book 'The INGO Problem' by Deborah Doane, launched recently and already greatly loved by the community.    Adeso is honored and proud to partner with Re-imagining the INGO (RINGO) and Deborah in our ongoing efforts to shift the power and decolonize aid and philanthropy. The book launch earlier this week in collaboration with the RINGO Project highlighted that the failure of INGOs is deeply systemic, as the intrinsic model of INGOs is based on an extractive growth strategy that is steeped in coloniality, thereby generating a competitive, scarcity model instead of a partnership-driven co-creation process. With the #shiftthepower movement and #decolonizeaid there is a sector-wide call for critically questioning and transforming the operating system of aid delivery and the purpose of INGOs. Crucial questions to consider for people working in the sector:  🩵 What would our work look like if it were rooted in deep solidarity with the local communities we are trying to serve?   🩵 How can we center capacity-building for self-determination and allocation of assets and resources, going beyond acute crisis-response to actively cultivating a locally led paradigm?     Some key points made during the conversation:   💡 INGO’s need to shrink. However, INGOs will continue to raise significant funds of money - so how will they invest in strengthening and expanding local self-led capacity with the long-term view of stepping aside? How can local civil society organizations LEAD INGOs instead of the other way around? 💡 The system is based on distrust rather than trust, resulting in the failure of INGOs to recognise how to practice true solidarity. 💡 We need to stop positioning INGOs as the saviours of the world's problems, as this narrative reinforces harmful stereotypes. This starts with changing how and why we tell our story. This is why one of the pledges of the Pledge for Change is “Authentic Storytelling”. As highlighted in the book launch: INGO’s began to emerge through people simply wanting to help. With the polycrises of today the number of people wanting to contribute to dismantling oppressive systems is increasing day by day. This is what will be always at the core of civil society: improving livelihoods for self-determination and resourcefulness.
