"No More Plastic!" "Less Plastic, More Life!" 📣 Prior to the start of INC-5 in Busan #today, citizens and global civil society groups came together on Saturday for the '11.23 Busan Plastic March', to call for a fair #PlasticsTreaty for the #people and #planet According to the hosts of the march, which was led by the global Break Free From Plastic (BFFP) movement and local Korean allies from the Uproot Plastics Coalition, at least 1,500 joined the march calling attention to the importance of plastic pollution and accountability for those who are leading the negotiations. Participants shared various messages related to plastic pollution - including its impact on human health and greenhouse gas emissions, and called attention to the role of industry and governments in addressing this urgent crisis. As countries come together this week for the 5th and final time to agree on a legally-binding treaty to manage #PlasticPollution - the world is watching. #COP29 highlights - #SouthKorea joins global momentum to curb #methane emissions from organic #waste! On November 19th, 30 countries, collectively responsible for nearly 50% of global methane from organic waste emissions, endorsed the 'COP29 Declaration on Reducing Methane from Organic Waste'. South Korea was listed as the second country on the list, right after Azerbaijan the host country of COP29. This move boosts the likelihood of Korea setting measurable #MethaneReductionTargets for #OrganicWaste in its #NDC. It’s also a golden opportunity to showcase its world-class waste policies and technologies as a global leader. Moving forward, it will be important to see how this move contributes to strengthening South Korea’s 2030 Methane Reduction Roadmap and accelerating meaningful methane reduction efforts across waste, agriculture, and energy sectors. Will countries reach consensus on restricting #oil & #gas finance globally? With OECD negotiations in Paris set to wrap-up today, it remains unclear whether #SouthKorea and #Turkey have shifted their stance to join the majority of countries in aligning on a new agreement to restrict #fossilfuel finance. Between 2018 and 2022, export-credit agencies in OECD - OCDE countries financed an average of $41 billion annually in #oil and #gas projects. The agreement is critical for curbing the harmful impacts of fossil fuels and shifting much-needed financing towards #RenewableEnergy. We have just unveiled the results of the #CCPI2025 at COP29 Azerbaijan in Baku! 🌍🔎 Some key findings: 1️⃣ Once again, the top three ranks of the CCPI remain empty, as no country is yet doing enough to prevent dangerous climate change. 🤦♀️ 2️⃣ Denmark leads the ranking for the fourth consecutive year. 🇩🇰🏆 3️⃣ Fossil fuel-dependent countries, including Russia, the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, and Iran, are at the bottom of the index. BREAKING 📢 #SouthKorea ranks near the bottom of the newly released CCPI - Climate Change Performance Index by Germanwatch e.V., Climate Action Network International & the New Climate Institute. Released today at #COP29 in Baku, the CCPI saw South Korea's score 63rd, remaining in the red with the lowest "very low" score across all the assessed categories - GHG Emissions, Renewable Energy, Energy Use, and Climate Policy. Key considerations: - In August 2024, the Constitutional Court of Korea ruled that the country’s climate measures were #unconstitutional, with the lack of an emissions reduction plan after 2030 infringing on the basic rights of the country’s current and future generations. - South Korea’s ND) includes the goals of increasing #RenewableEnergy to 70% and phasing out #coal by 2050. The goal should be more aligned with the Paris Agreement and updated to phase out coal and gas-powered energy by 2035. - While South Korea’s joining the #GlobalMethanePledge to reduce methane by 30% compared with the 2020 level was a positive step, the country should halt new oil and gas financing and exploration. - More ambitious #targets for phasing out #fossilfuels & better #implementation plans to speed up renewable energy are needed.
