Last week, I participated in the panel discussion “Generational Perspectives: Understanding the Difference” alongside Dato’ Sri Azmi Abdul Aziz (CEO Rail Division at YTL Construction), Soo Fern Lee from EY, and Komalah Selva of Patience Modular, with Hwei Tan moderating the conversation. Our discussion revealed that the perceived differences between generations are often less about inherent traits and more about the life stages individuals are navigating. Drawing on Maslow’s hierarchy of needs, we explored how older generations are frequently focused on fulfilling their fundamental needs, which influences their approach to work and communication—favoring a slow and steady pace with a preference for stability. In contrast, younger generations, having their basic needs largely met, are more empowered to voice their opinions, seek innovation, and drive change. This shift in focus helps explain why Gen Y and younger cohorts are often seen as more outspoken and proactive. Understanding these dynamics and what's in it for everyone is key to collaborate effectively across generations, especially after recognizing each generation’s unique motivations and challenges. By appreciating that these differences stem from where individuals are in their life journeys, rather than broad generational labels, organizations can better harness the diverse strengths of their workforce to achieve sustained growth and innovation. #GenerationalPerspectives #Leadership #WorkforceDiversity #IntergenerationalCollaboration #DigitalTransformation #StrategicLeadership #AI #Innovation #ProfessionalDevelopment PayNet (Payments Network Malaysia)
