Water Smart Industrial Symbiosis for using wastewater as a resource.
Over ons
ULTIMATE will act as a catalyst for “Water Smart Industrial Symbiosis” (WSIS) in which water/wastewater plays akey role both as a reusable resource but also as a vector for energy and materials to be extracted, treated, stored andreused within a dynamic socio-economic and business oriented industrial ecosystem. We adopt an evidence-basedapproach anchored on 9 large-scale demonstrations across Europe and SE Mediterranean relevant to the agro-foodprocessing, beverages, heavy chemical/petrochemical and biotech industries. We recover, refine and reuse wastewater(industrial and municipal) but also extract and exploit energy (combined water-energy management, treatmentprocesses as energy producers, water-enabled heat transfer, storage and recovery) and materials (nutrient miningand reuse, extraction and reuse of high-added-value exploitable compounds) contained in industrial wastewater. Wesupport the cases and ensure their replicability through smart tools to optimize and control, assess costs and benefits, minimize risks and help stakeholders identify, assess and explore alternative symbiotic pathways linked to emergingbusiness opportunities, supported by tailored contracts and investment schemes. ULTIMATE nurtures partnershipsbetween business (incl. industrial and technological ecosystems), water service providers, regulators and policymakers and actively supports them through immersive Mixed Reality storytelling using technology and art to co-produce shared visions for a more circular, profitable, socially responsible and environmentally friendly industry, withwater at its centre. The project mobilises a strong partnership of industrial complexes and symbiosis clusters, leadingwater companies and water service providers, specialised SMEs, research institutes and water-industry collaborationnetworks, and builds on an impressive portfolio of past and ongoing research and innovation, leveraging multiple European & global networks to ensure real impact. 🎥New video online! We just published the video news release for the ULTIMATE project, showcasing two of our demo cases on Water-Smart Industrial Symbiosis, short WSIS. What makes these two cases so special? 🇮🇹 In Rosignano, Italy, partners from Università Politecnica delle Marche , CONSORZIO ARETUSA, Consorzio Polo Tecnologico Magona, and West Systems S.r.l. are working on solutions to avoid saltwater intrusion in the wastewater treatment plant. By implementing reverse osmosis desalination and an early warning system for salinity, they're ensuring recycled water meets the required quality standards. 🇬🇷 In Nafplio, Greece, our partner Greener than Green Technologies SA installed a pilot which is extracting valuable polyphenols from the wastewater of a fruit processing company. With the recovery of these valuable byproducts there are new buisness opportunities for industries in the food and cosmetics sectors. Have a look to get to know more! #CirulaEconomy #IndustrialSymbiosis #WaterReuse #WSIS #DigitalTools #MaterialRecovery

📣 NEW Publication online! The Horizon Magazine published a new article featuring the @ULTIMATE Water EU and also the WATER-MINING H2020 project. Get to know how both projects are developing different solutions to Europe’s growing water scarcity problem by the reuse of wastewater. In the special case of the ULTIMATE case study in the Netherlands, our partners from KWR Water Research Institute are using electrodialysis to recover high-quality water from the wastewater of 60 greenhouses in an energy-efficient way. This process also allows the recovery of nutrients for use as fertiliser. 🌐 https://lnkd.in/eS7wZnvk #Horizon2020 #WaterReuse #IndustrialSymbioses #WaterSmart #WSIS #EnergyRecovery #Nutrients

On the 19th of June I had the pleasure of organizing together with Water Europe the policy workshop entitled "Building water-smart economy: How circular economy solutions contribute to ensuring water resilience and security?”. This is the 2nd workshop organized by the "Policy & Long-term impact" Working Group of the #CIRSEAU cluster. Evdokia Achilleos from the European Research Executive Agency (REA) opened the workshop, stressing the need to improve water resilience in Europe and how the EC has contributed towards this direction by providing funding of approx. 1.3 billion EUR to water-related projects within the #H2020 framework programme. The following presentations were made from the CIRSEAU projects to provide evidence on how to improve water resilience: Sander B. representing B-WaterSmart Project "Circular solutions and their contribution to a more robust and climate-proof water system in Flanders, the case of Mechelen" Preben Thisgaard representing ULTIMATE Water EU "Securing future water supply in the Kalundborg Industrial Symbiosis (Denmark) by exploitation of the water reuse potential" Frank Rogalla representing REWAISE EU project "The case of Almeria - Water Reuse and Resource Recovery in Europe´s Driest Area" Jaroslav Pollert representing WIDER UPTAKE EU Project "Reclaimed wastewater for urban irrigation – opportunities and challenges in the case of Prague" I represented WATER-MINING H2020 "Advancing resilience of the drinking water sector through #CircularDesalination – the case of #Cyprus" After discussing the evidence provided in our presentations within 2 break-out sessions, a great panel discussion followed, where we had the pleasure and honor to discuss with Bertrand Vallet from #DGRTD Trudy Higgins from #DGENV, Maurits Pino from #DGGROW and Oliver Loebel from EurEau In the upcoming weeks, we are preparing a publication to share the evidence from our CIRSEAU project results on how water resilience can be promoted within the EU. I was honoured to participate in the panel discussion on moving straight ahead to #circulareconomy at the Water Europe #WIE2024 event. Chaired by Water Europe president Hans Goossens together with Pär Larshans Andreas Bichler and Veronica Manfredi we discussed market opportunities, policy drivers and initiatives on European and Regional scale. I strongly belief that there are many circular examples already piloted and implemented that can promote and support authorities and industries to take action now. Waiting longer will increase the costs to transform from a #linear to a #circular water economy. KWR Water Research Institute ULTIMATE Water EU
