About us
We’re working for a better city for people on bikes But more than that: we believe that more people on bikes makes for a better city. Call it a virtuous cycle. Bike Auckland mobilises people power for a better city on bikes. As the independent voice for cycling in Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland, we lead the push for positive change, on behalf of everyone who rides a bike in our city – and everyone who would love to give it a go.

Great insights from Tim Welch 👏 Let's get the balance right. #streetsforall
Senior Lecturer | Urban Planning Programme Director | Co-Director: Future Cities Research Hub at The University of Auckland
🚲 Fascinating discovery from my recent research on cycling patterns in Auckland: When our streets became quieter during COVID lockdowns, local neighbourhood cycling SURGED by 37.7%! This unexpected finding emerged while studying weather impacts on cycling across 75 different cycling facilities. While most cycling infrastructure saw decreased use during lockdowns, local streets transformed into spaces where people felt comfortable riding bikes. The data tells a compelling story: When we remove the barrier of heavy traffic, people naturally gravitate toward cycling in their neighbourhoods. While lockdowns were an extreme and unique circumstance, they offered a glimpse into what's possible when our streets prioritize people over cars. This finding challenges us to think differently about street design. Better and more widespread traffic calming and low-speed zones could help recreate some of these conditions and make cycling more appealing for everyone.

59 bikes. 59 lives. Thousands left grieving. Each of these ghost bikes represents a person on a bike who has been killed in Aotearoa New Zealand in the last 5 years. In almost all cases, lower speed limits would have reduced the harm. Take a moment's silence to reflect on World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims 🕯️ With special thanks to the people who dreamt up and laboured on this art installation, to Greenpeace Aotearoa for their support, and to Brake (New Zealand) for their tireless work to make our roads safer. 📸 Simon Oosterman The full story 👇 https://lnkd.in/girqWy5s #ghostbike #artinstallation #tamakimakaurau #roaddeaths #speedrule #WDoR2024

The day of our Annual General Meeting is a great time to share our deep gratitude to all those who contributed in FY24 and those who are contributing in FY25. The Bike Auckland team felt a lot of aroha in the room today, and on the group ride which followed 💞 It takes a lot of work to put the AGM together - shout out to the organisers, presenters, including those who travelled to be with us, bike marshalls and of course, our fabulous Board, who all put their hands up to serve another term, and were unanimously voted in. Congratulations to all the Board Members, who give so much to Bike Auckland. Thanks also to Vibeke for capturing the AGM and group ride with photos and videos - this photo is her work 🙏
