Our Shanghai Industry Study Mission visited the Shanghai Futures Exchange (SHFE), one of China’s top five exchanges specialising in futures trading of commodities such as crude oil, copper, gold, and rubber.  SHFE serves over two million investors and is renowned for its high-quality price signals and strategic importance in both domestic and international markets, driving initiatives in technology and green energy.  During the tour, students were introduced to SHFE’s electronic matching system and its ceremonial trading hall, learning about the Exchange's robust risk management practices handled by expert engineers.  A heartfelt thank you to SHFE for the insightful and intriguing session! It was an eye-opening and enlightening experience for our students! We also visited BHP, a diversified global mining company specialising in copper, nickel, iron, coal, and potash. The BHP team shared with our students the copper industry's vital role in both the Chinese and global economies, highlighting its connection to the electric vehicle market. We also discussed the challenges of decarbonising the copper industry and BHP’s sustainability goals for 2050.  This session provided our students with a clearer understanding of the tangible constraints surrounding copper manufacturing processes. Thank you BHP for your insights and expertise!  #SMU #ITI #ISMShanghai #ShanghaiFuturesExchange #BHP #FuturesTrading #Commodities #Sustainability #GreenEnergy #CopperIndustry #ElectricVehicles #Decarbonization #LearningJourney

ITI@SMU’s first Industry Study Mission for 2024 kicked off with 24 students heading to Shanghai for a rewarding learning journey, exploring the dynamic landscape of China’s maritime and trading industry through a series of immersive experiences.     Day one of the study mission was spent at Shanghai Maritime University (SMU), delving into the world of maritime knowledge. Students received a series of bespoke lectures from Professor Shi Xin on International Maritime Business from China’s Perspective and Professor Chen Yang on the Challenges and Opportunities of Shipping and Maritime Business Operations in China. Both Professors shared useful insights and sparked meaningful discussions.      After the lectures, students had the privilege to tour the History Museum of SMU, learning about the rich heritage and evolution of both the university and China’s maritime industry. The artifacts and exhibits served as a testament to the impact of China’s rich maritime history.      #SMU #ITI #ISMShanghai #IndustryStudyMission #Maritime #LearningJourney
