Rights not Charity

About us

CRIN is a creative human rights organisation focused on children's rights. We challenge the status quo because the norms that dictate children and young people’s place in society need radical change. We press for rights – not charity – and campaign for a genuine shift in how governments and societies view and treat under-18s. Using research, policy, art and advocacy to communicate our vision for the future, we encourage people to think critically about the world. We want to ask hard questions about how we live, what needs to change and how we can contribute to a planet where all the intersections of our identities can thrive.

  • A joint statement from Eurochild and CRIN on Lebanon: While the genocide on Gaza continues, we express grave concern over the situation in Lebanon. The death toll from continuing Israeli attacks has now surpassed 620 victims, among which more than 50 children, since Monday 23 September. Countless more children are exposed to ongoing attacks and are displaced from their homes. The time for a response is now. Delay is unacceptable. Read our statement in full: https://lnkd.in/eHuSmbrk

NEW REPORT! The climate crisis is undeniably a human rights crisis. Intensifying extreme weather events and slow-onset effects such as rising temperatures, persistent drought, and sea-level rise are leading to widespread human rights violations. Those impacts are disproportionately affecting individuals, Peoples, and communities who are in vulnerable situations due to historical and present marginalization and intersecting forms of discrimination, oppression, exploitation, inequality, and violence. States have legal obligations to prevent, minimize, and remedy foreseeable human rights violations, including those due to the climate crisis. Such climate-related harm, also called loss and damage, is now widespread due to a failure to mitigate and provide adequate resources for adaptation. Our new report sets out the legal basis for demanding that States and corporations uphold their obligations to provide redress for mounting climate harm [link of the report in the first comment]. #ClimateReparations #RightToRemedy #LossAndDamage #AOLetsGO #HumanRights

  • Do you want to learn more about children's rights and climate litigation? 🔖 Don't forget to register for the Advancing Child Rights Strategic Litigation Project (ACRiSL) event on the politics of settlement in advancing justice for children, 3 December (17.00 – 18.00 GMT). For more details see below or visit bit.ly/4fBZ4fM.

The Advancing Child Rights Strategic Litigation Project (ACRiSL) will be hosting a network event on 3 December between 17.00 – 18.00 GMT. During the public panel, a range of experts will discuss how the possibility of settlement impacts child rights strategic litigation. How do settlements affect litigation strategy? What opportunities and challenges arise from settlement decision-making processes and outcomes?   Speakers include Caoilfhionn Gallagher KC - Barrister at Doughty Street Chambers; Ronaldah Lerato Karabo Ozah - Senior Attorney and Director of the Centre for Child Law at the University of Pretoria, ACRiSL Project; Andrea Rodgers - Deputy Director, U.S. Strategy, Our Children’s Trust; and Ann Skelton - Professor of Law, UNESCO Chair in Education Law at the University of Pretoria, Chair of the UN Committee on the Rights of the Child, ACRiSL Project.   Child Rights Strategic Litigation (CRSL) is litigation that seeks to bring about positive legal and social change in terms of children’s enjoyment of their rights. ACRiSL is a global research collaboration bringing together partners from advocacy and academia to work on child rights strategic litigation. This project is exploring the ways that strategic litigation has been used to advance children's rights, has developed a model of strategic litigation that itself respects children's rights and has brought cases and supported other strategic litigators in their work. Anyone who is interested in learning more about securing children’s rights through legal processes is welcome to attend - including lawyers, academics and children’s rights advocates - whatever your background. We’re hoping to foster collaboration across sectors, to build new relationships and to strengthen CRSL efforts worldwide.   Sign up and read more about the event at bit.ly/4fBZ4fM. We hope to see you there!

  • After two weeks of furious negotiations, #COP29 concluded in Azerbaijan with a new finance goal that fails those most affected by the climate crisis, including children.   There was much controversy about where COP was held this year and a sense of both disappointment and outrage on the slow pace of progress of global policies fuelling our planet’s rapid warming.   In response, CRIN has chosen to break down this COP’s key outcomes, the context of its controversies and emphasise the intersections of climate justice and human rights. On a smaller scale, we also wanted to explain what COP is for those unfamiliar (or for anyone who’d heard the term and wanted to learn just what it was outside of being about the climate).   🚩 Where was this COP held and why does it matter? Is COP fit for purpose? What does all of this mean for children’s rights?   When COP first concluded, we shared a letter from passionate young people who advise and collaborate with several children’s rights organisations - including CRIN - on their work on children’s right to a safe, healthy and sustainable environment.   📢 With their voices and demands in mind, we have written this follow-up reflection on the international climate summit: COP29 - a betrayal for climate justice and children’s rights.   Read the full story at bit.ly/412Z6Ji.    #ClimateAction #ClimateJustice #EnvironmentalJustice #ClimateCrisis

  • As we move towards the end of 2024, CRIN is looking back at the year in child rights climate litigation… Our reflections include State obligations to prevent harm caused by climate change under the European Court of Human Rights and in the International Court of Justice (#ICJ), growing national litigation related to environmental justice and the challenges children still face in most jurisdictions. It's been a busy year for children’s rights climate litigation. But what comes next? ⚖️ To read CRIN’s piece on #ChildRights and #ClimateJustice, go to bit.ly/4eP8VxI.

This #WorldChildrenDay serves as a reminder to uphold the rights of every child. Systemic Israeli violence places the rights of Palestinian children under constant threat. Children face unimaginable hardships including targeted killing, forced displacement, detention and torture, forced starvation, and the loss of the safety of homes and loved ones. No child should grow up like this. Palestinian children, like all other children, deserve to dream, play, and thrive in safety and dignity. Use our recent visuals to show how Israel targets Palestinian children in the West Bank and Gaza. https://lnkd.in/eEgraJNZ
