Dr Kerryn Krige shares her reflections following her second year with us at the Marshall Institute. Her key lessons: 1. The importance of local language in our understanding of social entrepreneurship and the social and solidarity economy 2. Why legal form for social enterprise is a fraught policy goal And some questions for 2025 1. Solidarity of whom, for what? 2. What are the boundaries of exclusive inclusivity? What do you see in this photo? There are countless stories I could tell… Starting with my parents, who grew up in circumstances many today would describe as "below the poverty line". My Mum left home at 16 due to family challenges, and my Dad left school with no qualifications. But they turned adversity into strength, building resilience, working tirelessly, and always helping others. My Dad’s parents emigrated from Ireland in the 1950s, with my grandfather constructing roads and even building one of the few remaining Working Men’s Clubs in Bristol. My Grandad recalled signs on pubs and B&Bs that read: “No Irish, No Dogs, No Blcks.”. Meanwhile, my Nan raised eight children in a tiny post-war council house and still found room to care for children less fortunate. Their grit, love and drive has shaped my story, but it wasn’t without challenges of my own. At 18, I was too fearful to start university, feeling like I didn’t belong. I found my way into Higher Education through a Degree Apprenticeship in Engineering, where I developed technical, personal and professional skills but struggled to reconcile my inner identity with the professional face I wore and the sector I worked in. After a decade in Aerospace, I took the life-altering leap to quit it all. Leaving behind my career, relationships, mortgage, and comfort zone; to travel the world for two years. It was during this journey that I discovered alternative ways to live and work, with Social Enterprise and Social Ventures capturing my heart and mind. Fast forward to today: this photo symbolises that journey. A moment of immense pride as I graduate from the The London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE) Executive MSc Social Business and Entrepreneurship at the Marshall Institute. 🎉 I am deeply grateful for everyone who supported me along the way. To my parents; your unwavering belief in me has been my foundation. To my primary and secondary school teachers, managers and mentor, the School for Social Entrepreneurs, and those who advocated for my scholarship to LSE; thank you for the opportunities and encouragement to thrive. This Master’s program is truly unique, combining world-class academic insights with practical tools to empower change-makers. And the most rewarding part? The people. Learning alongside brilliant, diverse minds from across the globe has been transformative. Together, we’ve built lifelong connections and inspired each other to dream bigger. If you’re considering a career shift or want to deepen your understanding of creating impact, I cannot recommend this program enough. It will change your perspective—and your life. #LSE #SocialBusiness #Entrepreneurship #Graduation #SocialImpact #Gratitude

💭Should every child have a trust fund? Professor Julian le Grand and Professor Niels Planel argue yes in their most recent article for Noema Magazine. “A good education can do only so much; significant capital is required to kickstart adult life on solid ground” Read the full article here: https://lnkd.in/gfzQkCJf

📅Save the date! February 4th 2025 17:00-19:00 GMT Online We are delighted to host Jessica Pryce-Jones and Christian Busch , in conversation with Stephan Chambers to discuss Jess’ new book: Intuition at Work: Using your Gut Feelings to Get Ahead! In today’s business landscape, data-driven strategies dominate the decision-making process, and quite rightly. Unfortunately, relying only on spreadsheets and analysis limits everyone’s thinking when it comes to generating new ideas, navigating uncertainty, and reacting in a crisis or in times that demand quick, accurate decisions in a fast-moving context. That’s when intuition is such an invaluable tool because it captures the full value, subtlety and range of human experience, something which AI or algorithms can never do. There’s plenty of solid research which shows that when leaders use intuition, they make better strategic decisions; problem-solve more effectively; assess and analyse risks better; and make more effective hires, to name a few critical activities. In essence, intuition helps to cut through to better outcomes and, just as importantly, stops people from selecting worse ones. 🔗 Join us online by registering here: https://lnkd.in/ef2v4CEw

We are delighted to announce that Carlos Miranda will be joining the Marshall Institute as a Practitioner in Residence in 2025! Carlos is an entrepreneur passionate about business with purpose. Over the past 15 years, he has founded three businesses that help both for- and non-profit organisations realise their social impact ambitions. His first venture, I.G. Advisors, bridges the gap between fundraisers, businesses and philanthropists and is an award-winning advisor and thought partner to some of the world’s biggest organisations including the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, Ford Foundation, UN Women, and UNICEF. Through his work with I.G.’s clients, Carlos realised that most non-profits were not using either social media or technology as well as they could be. His next two businesses aimed to bridge that gap: Social Misfits Media, a social media agency acquired by Freuds Communications in 2020, and Lightful, a tech-for-good company, where Carlos served as Chairman until 2023. Over the years, Carlos has served on the Board of many non-profit organizations. Currently, he is on the Board of Foundation Scotland. He holds an MSc from the London School of Economics and a BA from New York University. A native Spanish speaker and an avid fan of ramen, coffee and sci-fi, he’s also father to very rambunctious boy-girl twins. Unfortunately, he failed to convince his wife Alisha of the benefits of naming them Luke and Leia. We’re very excited to have Carlos working closely with us for 2025 and joining our amazing community of Practitioners in residence! Swatee Deepak Sonal Sachdev Patel Luke Fletcher Manuel Antunes
