National Eye Health Week 2024 - Monday 23rd- Sunday 29th September. Did you know that a routine eye test with a community optometrist is much more than a simple assessment for spectacles? Optometrists are trained to review the health of your eye, detecting any abnormalities of the eye itself, the eye muscles, and structures around the eye. Some optometrists have additional qualifications to prescribe medications, and will be able to treat some eye conditions in their practice. Other eye conditions are treated in hospitals and community ophthalmology services. The eye can also give your optometrist an indication about your overall general health. Optometrists may detect abnormalities which indicate problems with your body such as uncontrolled high blood pressure or diabetes. In the UK, free NHS eye tests are available to under 16s and those aged 60 or over. You may also be eligible if you are over the age of 40 and have a close family member diagnosed with glaucoma. Free NHS sight testing and support with the cost of spectacles can also be accessed by those on certain means tested benefits. Full details on those eligible for NHS funded eye tests can be found here: Free NHS eye tests and optical vouchers - NHS (www.nhs.uk) It is recommended that you have an eye test every two years, or in some cases more frequently, in order to maintain eye health. 🌍💛 World Suicide Prevention Day | September 10th 💛🌍 World Suicide Prevention Day (WSPD) was established in 2003 by the International Association for Suicide Prevention in conjunction with the World Health Organization (WHO). The 10th September each year aims to focus attention on the issue, reduces stigma and raises awareness and offer support to help reduce these numbers. In 2024, it's estimated that over 700,000 people will die by suicide globally. That's one person every 45 seconds. But we can make a difference. By raising awareness and offering support, we can help reduce these numbers. If you or someone you know is struggling, please remember that you are not alone. Reach out, talk, and let's break the stigma around mental health. A simple conversation can make all the difference. Let’s be the voice that makes someone feel heard and the light that guides someone out of darkness. #WorldSuicidePreventionDay #YouAreNotAlone #BreakTheStigma #MentalHealthMatters

Uniary Tract Infections (UTIs) are more common than you think! Did you know that UTIs, which affect the bladder (cystitis) or urethra, are the second most common infection after chest infections? They lead to about 8 million visits to healthcare providers each year! While UTIs are common in women, men who experience them should also seek thorough investigation. 🔍 Symptoms to watch out for: Cloudy, foul-smelling urine (possibly with blood) Frequent and urgent need to urinate Burning sensation during urination Lower abdominal pain or discomfort A simple course of antibiotics usually clears up the infection within 24 hours, but if you're dealing with recurrent UTIs, a more in-depth assessment may be necessary. Our specialist consultant, Fahd Khan, offers tailored treatment strategies, from dietary and lifestyle advice to advanced therapies or surgery in order to manage your symptoms effectively. For more information, contact our Private Urology Services Team at 0300 200 1800. #UTIs #UniraryTractInfection #Haematuria #Urine #UniraryTract #BladderInfection #Ecoli #Urology

As part of National Eye Exam month, this week is Contact Lens Health Week 👀 Here are some top contact lens tips and myths busted from our resident Optometrist ACP ✅ Always wash your hands with soap and water before handling your contact lenses. ❌ Never swim or shower in your contact lenses, or wash your contact lenses in water. Doing so will put you at risk of a serious eye infection called acanthamoeba. ✅ Replace your contact lens case regularly. There will usually be a new one supplied with every new bottle of contact lens solution. ❌ Never exceed the recommended wearing modality of your lenses, or expiry of your contact lens solution. ✅ Only use contact lens solutions recommended by your optometrist or contact lens optician. ➡️ Contact lens wearers are recommended to have an annual review with their optometrist or contact lens optician. This is different to a sight test and specifically focuses on your contact lens vision and fit, as well as the health of your cornea (window of the eye) and ocular surface. ➡️ If purchasing contact lenses from the internet, it is recommended that you have had a contact lens check within 12 months. Reputable online retailers will ask you to confirm this, and may request a copy of your most up-to-date prescription. ➡️ Your contact lens prescription is not interchangeable between brands of contact lenses. It may also be different from your spectacle prescription. ➡️ If in doubt, take it out! If you experience a red and/or painful eye, do not continue contact lens wear. Remove your lenses and seek urgent review with your contact lens optician or optometrist, or if not available, attend eye casualty 👀 #EyeHealth #ContactLenses #EyeCare #ContactLenseWeek
