WE HAD A BALL! SMASH Researchers, Ava Sjoberg, William McMahon, and Jack Ambrose, were part of a committee who organised the first ever Winter Ball for PGRs and staff in the School of Chemical, Materials and Biological Engineering at the University of Sheffield. The event raised over £1000 for Sheffield Children's NHS Foundation Trust through a raffle and other donations from over 100 attendees on the night. Thanks to all those who attended and congratulations to Will, Jack and Ava on all your hard work which made this event so incredible! #extracurricular #networking #universityofsheffield #phd #committee #charity #ball

SMASH CELEBRATIONS! Last night, we swapped lab coats for Christmas jumpers to take an evening to celebrate our hard work and achievements of 2024. I think it’s safe to say that some members should not be quitting their research to take up professional bowling any time soon! We look forward to bringing you more news and updates regarding all things cement & sustainable materials in 2025. Thanks to our LinkedIn family for all of your support and we wish you a very enjoyable festive season! WELCOME TO HARRISON - ONE OF OUR NEW PHD RESEARCHERS! Harrison Slack has recently joined SMASH in the School of Chemical, Materials and Biological Engineering at the University of Sheffield as one of our three new PhD researchers! His project focusses on the use of LC3 cements for the disposal of nuclear wastes, particularly the investigation of damage mechanisms and leachability performance of the cements. This research is jointly funded by Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) and The University of Sheffield. Harrison completed his undergraduate and masters studies here, at the The University of Sheffield after graduating with an MEng in Chemical Engineering with Nuclear Technology. In his spare time Harrison says "I'm usually either at the gym or enjoying one of my many hobbies - mainly card games or tabletop RPGs (anything that you'd classify as 'nerd-stuff' really). Other than that I enjoy cooking and the pub." We look fun to welcoming Harrison and keeping up to date with the advancements of his project! #cement #research #researchanddevelopment #novelcements #phd #netzero #welcome #universityofsheffield #chemicalengineering #engineering

CMBE PhD Open Day! Yesterday, SMASH Leader, Brant Walkley, hosted the School of Chemical, Materials and Biological Engineering at the University of Sheffield (CMBE) PhD Open Day in his role as the School PGR Lead. Many current researchers from the school, including our own SMASH representatives, came along to chat to prospective students and present some of their recent posters to give an overview of the research that goes on. There was an excellent turnout and we look forward to welcoming many of you back as PhD researchers. For more information about the studentships availible in CMBE, please visit FindaPhD.com using the following link: https://lnkd.in/eidZvqEm #phd #research #student #doctorate #cement #chemicalengineering #materialscienceengineeeing #biologicalengineeing #researchanddevelopment

SMASH (Sustainable Materials @ Sheffield) reposted this
We are thrilled to share that Green Lithium recently completed a groundbreaking R&D project in partnership with SMASH (Sustainable Materials @ Sheffield), Sol Environment Ltd and Innovate UK. This collaboration represents a significant step forward in driving the use of our process coproduct in various other applications, including in the construction materials sector, creating true circular economies from our lithium refineries in Teesside, UK. Greg Bogie, Commercial Director of Green Lithium, commented: “By combining the knowledge and expertise of our R&D team with the cutting-edge research capabilities of the School of Chemical, Materials and Biological Engineering at the University of Sheffield, we have successfully completed this first-of-a-kind innovation for the UK.” “This project demonstrates our commitment to enabling our planet’s transition to sustainable energy by increasing the supply of low-carbon lithium products. We would like to thank Innovate UK for recognising the potential of this initiative and supporting its development – we are extremely grateful.”

SMASH ON TOUR - LEEDS EDITION! Last month, SMASH researchers, William McMahon, Shubham Jain, Ph.D., Micael Silva and Madeline Rihner attended the Neville symposium at the University of Leeds and had a great time celebrating the 200th anniversary Joseph Aspdin patenting Portland cement. The Neville Symposium is an annual event aimed at early career researchers hosted jointly by the University of Leeds, The Concrete Society, and the Neville Centre of Excellent in Cement and Concrete Engineering. The theme of this year's event was "Cement - Past, Present, and Future". All SMASH delegates found the event insightful and look forward to carrying forward the knowledge they gained into their future research! #conference #research #researchanddevelopment #cement #concrete #phd #netzero #sustainability #postdoc #universityofleeds #universityofsheffield #materialsengineering #chemicalengineering

Excellent work Byoungkwan. We can’t wait to have you back in Sheffield as part of SMASH!
I recently had the opportunity to present at two fascinating events: 1) Recent Advances in Low-pH Cement and Geopolymer for the Disposal of High-Level Radioactive Waste at the Korean Society of Engineering Geology, and 2) an invited seminar on Development of Alkali- or Acid-Activated Geopolymer Waste Forms to Immobilize Low and Intermediate-Level Radioactive Wastes at the Nuclear Decommissioning Workshop, organized by the Nuclear Decommissioning Industry Technology Research Association. These experiences were incredibly enriching, as I had the chance to meet experts from diverse fields, including nuclear science and geoscience. The insights I gained will undoubtedly inform and shape my future work. As I prepare to embark on a new research journey at Sheffield, I'm filled with excitement about the direction my work is taking. The prospect of exploring new areas in wasteform research is particularly thrilling, and I look forward to tackling the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead. #geopolymer #radioactivewaste
