We welcome the announcement that the UK government has funded the Food Standards Agency (FSA) first-of-its-kind cultivated meat regulatory 'sandbox'. President of the Alternative Proteins Association, Jeremy Coller said: “Today’s announcement shows the world that the UK government is serious about supporting British innovation and attracting international investment. The UK has the potential to be at the front of the pack in Europe’s projected £70B cultivated meat market, but only if investors know we are open for business. The creation of this sandbox is a fantastic step forward for growing British businesses.” We look forward to continue to collaborate with UK government, our members in industry and partners, to deliver the benefits of this innovative and high growth sector. #altprotein #cultivatedmeat #foodsystems #innovation #policy
🇬🇧🧫🥩 UK GOVERNMENT BACKS REGULATOR TO SPEED UP CULTIVATED MEAT APPROVALS Today, the UK government has awarded £1.6M to the Food Standards Agency (FSA) to create a first-of-its-kind regulatory ‘sandbox’ for cultivated meat producers. The idea is to “support innovation through safety” by speeding up the timeline and lowering the costs related to regulatory clearance. Sandboxes comprise controlled environments for situations where scientific and technological innovation has outpaced existing regulation – a lot of companies are currently making cultivated meat, but the UK’s authorisation process is slow and congested. These sandboxes run for a limited period to help startups, researchers and regulators work together to develop new rules, standards and guidance. The investment for the Cell-Cultivated Products Regulatory Sandbox is part of the first round of the Department for Science, Innovation and Technology’s Engineering Biology Sandbox Fund. In addition to the financing, the FSA said it is pressing ahead with plans to set up a system of international cooperation, which would see the UK greenlight cultivated meat products that have been approved by other countries. In a parallel effort, the government has also created a Regulatory Innovation Office to reduce the burden of red tape and accelerate public access to new technologies. It will work together with the Department for Transport (DfT), United Kingdom, the Department for Health and Social Care, and the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs. Robert E. Jones, president of trade association Cellular Agriculture Europe, said the move signposted the UK’s aim to be an innovation leader by “boosting its global competitiveness in the race to address food security and sustainability issues in our food systems”. “The UK has the potential to be at the front of the pack in Europe’s projected £70B cultivated meat market, but only if investors know we are open for business,” added Jeremy Coller, president of the Alternative Proteins Association. “The creation of this sandbox is a fantastic step forward for growing British businesses.” More information in the full article: https://lnkd.in/eWJuy8R4 #GreenQueen #altprotein #cultivatedmeat #foodsystems #foodtech #policy #sustainability #futurefoods

We are proud to share that we’ve organised the first formal tasting of our Mosa Burger in The Netherlands. Participants included Dutch cattle farmers, food product developers and industry representatives who shared their candid tasting feedback with us. The goals for these tastings include assessing market readiness of products and collecting feedback from culinary experts for product development purposes. Maarten Bosch, our CEO said: "We are delighted to finally share our burgers with experts outside of the company, so they can help us create the best burgers possible. In this first tasting we specifically evaluated the potential of cultivated beef fat as an ingredient in a blend with plant based ingredients, as we know it is responsible for the flavour, aromas, mouthfeel and even sizzle people love from beef. We’ve been able to conclude that our cultivated fat has a very positive impact on the product quality This means that in addition to the cultivated beef for which we have submitted a regulatory approval request in Singapore, we can also elevate the culinary experience of plant based products and delight more beef lovers faster.” #mosaburger #cultivatedmeat #cravechange

It is exciting to see GOURMEY submit cultivated food dossiers to UK Food Standards Agency amongst other key jurisdictions. GOURMEY's Foie Gras, made from cultivated duck cells, aims to provide a new option for fine dining enthusiasts worldwide. As the UK and Europe seek to enhance food security and reduce reliance on low-quality and environmentally harmful food imports, cultivated foods can complement existing agrifood value chains, serving as a powerful tool for long-term resilience. This brings us one step closer to creating new revenue opportunities for farmers to grow the feedstock we need for cultivating cells at large scale. Innovation and traditional farming can not only coexist but also support each other in building a future-proof food system, making farming more attractive for the next generation. #alternativeproteins #cultivatedfoods #foodinnovation
Pivotal milestone for GOURMEY and the cultivated foods ecosystem. We’re thrilled to announce that over the past few months, GOURMEY has requested market approval in five regions, filing applications with the US FDA, Singapore Food Agency, UK Food Standards Agency, Swiss Federal Food Safety and Veterinary Office FSVO, and the European Commission. This achievement makes us the very first cultivated food company to file for approval in the EU. Complying with the rigorous standards of the world’s most advanced agencies on cultivated foods regulation, including the EU’s stringent novel food framework, is a testament to GOURMEY’s technology leadership, our commitment to safety, and the immense dedication of our team. We want to celebrate a massive team effort from all Gourmates, involving relentless work over the past few years to build a safe, resource-efficient, and commercially viable solution. We’ll first empower our culinary partners with our flagship cultivated duck product, offering a new choice for foie gras enthusiasts, chefs, and restaurants worldwide, followed by further sustainable and delicious foods as we continue to scale up. As Europe aims to boost food security and achieve sustainability goals, we are convinced that cultivated foods have strong potential to complement existing agrifood value chains, enhancing the long-term resilience of our food system. We look forward to continuing our close collaboration with regulatory authorities to introduce our products to the market. Special mention to the leadership of our Regulatory & Food Safety team: Hannah Lester, Brian Chun, Nadine Bongaerts-Duportet, Ph.D., and Victor SAYOUS. We are deeply thankful for all our partners, advisors, investors, and supporters. Thank you for being part of our journey—much more to come! We are thrilled to share that, our member company Meatly, has received authorisation to sell cultivated pet food in the UK! This historic development is a testament to the forward thinking approach the UK can take. A huge congratulations to Owen Ensor and the entire team for navigating the rigorous process for authorisation. We are excited to see what's next for Meatly! #alternativeproteins #cultivated #petfood
Today is a momentous day for Meatly, as well as the European cultivated meat and pet food industries. Meatly has authorisation to sell in the UK. This makes us the first company in Europe to be authorised to sell cultivated meat, and the first in the world to get authorisation to sell cultivated pet food. Over the last 18 months, we’ve worked proactively with the UK’s FSA, DEFRA, and APHA to clarify the right regulatory pathway for cultivated pet food and pass the rigorous inspection process. They have now confirmed that we can sell product. This is not only momentous because we’re the first, but because we’ve done this in only two years, with £3.5m. That's dramatically less time and capital than other cultivated meat companies approved for sale. A huge thanks to the Food Standards Agency, Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, and Animal and Plant Health Agency for their commitment to placing the UK at the forefront of food innovation. As ever, none of this would be possible without Helder and the dedication and commitment of the incredible Meatly team: Anastasiia, Zoe, Kim, Miru, Desiree, Magno, Jordan, Beatriz F., and Davide Stefanutti, as well as our fantastic private and public investors including Agronomics Limited and Pets at Home. We’re just getting started. This is the end of the beginning. There is so much more to come. 🐶 🚀 🎉 Read more: - Financial Times: https://lnkd.in/eMWzaCgQ - WIRED: https://lnkd.in/ej-wbMzH
