On 16 December, the Government proposed a raft of changes for demand-side response (#DSR) participation in the #CapacityMarket (CM), including several policy proposals on consumer-led flexibility. The ambition is to support the 30-40GW of short duration flexible capacity the National Energy System Operator (NESO) estimates the country will need by 2030. ⚡ 👉 The Call for Evidence on DSR in the CM seeks feedback on policy proposals to categorize DSR technologies, improve de-rating factors, and address duration limits and baseline methodologies. Key aims include enhancing participation, accuracy in capacity claims, and managing small-scale assets effectively. 👉 The consultation on modernising CM rules and improving participation and delivery assurance of DSR suggests measures to improve consumer-led flexibility. These changes primarily affect timing and fees for non-delivery, aiming to reduce barriers and ensure effective participation and delivery. Check out Daniel Starman's latest Intelligence piece (linked in the comments) for all the details ⬇️

Government published its Clean Power 2030 Action Plan on 13 December ❗ These are the key points 👇 • It confirms National Energy System Operator's definition of clean power, where 95% of generation comes from clean sources. • It provides a Review of the Electricity Market Arrangements (#REMA) update, stating zonal and national pricing remain on the table and both have “equal weight”. A reformed national price would include changes to transmission and distribution charges, and government states “no change” is not an option. • Through an energy consumer lens, the Action Plan focuses on delivery of consumer-led flexibility (demand-side response, or #DSR). It states there will be a 2025 review of the application of final consumption levies for batteries and electric vehicles as these are not reimbursed when these assets export to the grid. • It also focuses on enablers such as the market-wide half-hourly settlement programme, smart meter rollout and standards, and government plans to publish a consultation on consumer engagement in the summer. • Capacity Market documentation was published on 16 December, consulting on the diversity of DSR technologies. Last week we celebrated our Christmas fun day in the Ipswich office! It's a yearly tradition we do here at Drax - a day for colleagues to come together and celebrate everything we've achieved in 2024.🎇 We enjoyed some Christmas bakes, 'Spin the wheel' hosted by the brilliant Stephanie and Leonie, had some festive music and sing-a-longs from our talented colleagues and held our annual raffle with help from Santa and his not-so-little helper!🎁

What role do Distribution Network Operators (DNOs) play in the metering process? 🤔 Delivering electricity directly to users makes DNOs pivotal in the UK’s metering process ✅ DNOs own and operate the wires, cables, poles, transformers and other equipment that take electricity from the National Grid to homes and businesses, providing stability and reliability. Learn more about the other players involved in the metering process, and what they do, in our article linked in the comments 👇

The UK leads the way in phasing out coal power 💪 As of 2023, the UK had reduced coal-fired generation by 98% from its peak and has become the world’s first large country to completely phase out coal power 👏 Coal’s still used in UK industry today, consuming 3 million tonnes in 2023. However, consumption has fallen more than 10-fold in a decade, and is just 1% of what was used in the 1950’s 📉 Around half of industry’s coal consumption is in coke ovens and blast furnaces to produce steel, and only two coal-consuming blast furnaces remain in the UK. There's a plan in place to replace both blast furnaces with electric arc furnaces to move the steel industry further towards a greener future 🌳 The government hasn’t yet announced a firm deadline to eliminate coal from all sectors, but its Industrial Decarbonisation Strategy will work towards this by promoting hydrogen and electrification for industry. The National Energy System Operator's Demand Flexibility Service is back, and electric fleets are the dream participants. 👆 That's what Director of Energy Services at Drax Electric Vehicles ⚡ , Adam Hall has to say. EV fleet operators hold a powerful position because fleet vehicles usually operate on a predictable schedule. For these vehicles, adjusting charging schedules to primarily off-peak periods will enable fleet managers to generate savings. 💸 Read more in our latest piece in The Energyst. Link in comments 👇
