  • A global crisis requires a global response, and there has never been a more important time for new funders to join the effort. A look at the HIV epidemic on a global scale reveals drastic regional inequities. Despite only 6% of people living with HIV living in Western & Central Europe and North America, the regions receive roughly US$119 per person living with HIV. In stark contrast, Latin America receives only US$2 of HIV-related philanthropy per person living with HIV. With 39 million people living with HIV worldwide, funding that is intersectional, international, and equitable is critical to reach the people and places most impacted by the epidemic. Rarely does a short commentary pack a punch, but this piece from the mind of the incomparable Jen Kates on the future of PEPFAR is as powerful as it is timely.

  • We encourage you to read this joint statement on #TransDayofRememberance and consider the actions you can take as donors: ➡ Prioritise funding directly to trans, gender diverse, sex worker-led and youth-led organisations ➡ Provide long-term, flexible and unrestricted funding  ➡ Provide funding that allows our communities to prepare for crises and be able to respond to emergencies ➡ Assess potential anti-rights opposition, attacks or threats within potential and current grantees ➡ Publicly pushback on oppressive and criminalising laws. 🖤 This is a day of tremendous grief. We have been commemorating Trans Day of Remembrance since 1999 when we united in grief to remember Rita Hester, a black trans woman who had been murdered. 🖤 Despite our best efforts, 25 years later, the violence not only continues but is actively encouraged by global anti-rights efforts that deny the very existence of trans people, fuel hatred and oppose the recognition of the basic human rights of trans people. 🖤 This year, the Trans Murder Monitoring Project by TGEU has recorded one of the highest numbers of murders (350) since the project records began in 2008, totalling more than 5,000 documented murders. 🖤 This is no doubt a consequence of the concerted efforts of anti-gender and anti-rights movements that instrumentalise and vilify trans people to push wider anti-democratic political agendas. 🖤 TGEU, GATE - Global Action for Trans Equality, ILGA World, APTN - Asia Pacific Transgender Network, IGLYO — The International LGBTQI Youth & Student Organisation, and ESWA have developed a Joint Statement for Trans Day of Remembrance 2024. In the statement, we honour the lives of our siblings and demand safety amidst growing hate and anti-rights movements through clear calls to action for policymakers, lawmakers, and donors. 🖤 Read and spread the full Joint Statement to help protect trans lives now: https://lnkd.in/dU2nbpwK #TransAwarenessWeek #TDoR  #TransRights #TransRightsAreHumanRights

Across the world, 63 countries criminalise the LGBTQ+ community (Human Dignity Trust). These laws, coupled with increasing anti-rights and anti-gender movements have a knock-on impact on all areas of society, especially healthcare. At ViiV Healthcare – the only global pharmaceutical company 100% committed to ending #HIV - we believe that everyone, no matter where they live, should have the freedom to be their authentic selves. I’m incredibly proud of the progress we’ve made towards achieving our mission - to leave no person living with – or affected by – HIV behind – and key to this is working in collaboration with communities including those who are often marginalised. We know there is always more to do and to accelerate progress we have to unite, to work together and create even stronger, more powerful partnerships that not only drive, but demand transformational change that lasts. That’s why today we’re announcing a commitment of $7.8million to #FundOurFutures – a campaign initiated by Global Philanthropy Project, Funders Concerned About AIDS and Funders for LGBTQ Issues to unlock $150million in new funding to support LGBTQ+ organisations and programmes over the next 3 years. Our funding will go directly to organisations working to counteract anti-rights activities, address HIV and LGBTQ+ stigma and discrimination, advance HIV healthcare services, access and advocacy, and amplify the voice of the community both locally and globally. At ViiV, our commitment to the LGBTQ+ community is unwavering. #WeWontStop challenging inequality until we build a safer, more inclusive world for everyone.
