Delve into our interactive “Live Emotion” gallery to explore some of the most iconic venues across sport, live performances and other major global events from the past 40 years. Our unique design history has acted as the backdrop for much bigger stories and moments — those of community, sustainability and passion — for four decades and counting. As we commemorate this milestone, we want to say thank you and celebrate with you, the individuals across the world who fill these venues with the emotion that gives them meaning. The Penrith Stadium Redevelopment is a chance to create a true hub for the growing Western Sydney community, and Populous is excited to be leading the new design. This major upgrade is focused on providing fans, athletes, and locals with an unforgettable experience. Shaped by feedback from over 3,000 residents, the new design emphasizes inclusivity and sustainability while creating modern, family-friendly spaces for both sports and entertainment. The revamped stadium will: 🏟️ Increase capacity to 25,000, with space for 10 concerts each year. ⚽ Enhance player facilities, including female-friendly amenities. ♿ Provide more accessible seating, bathrooms, and services. 🌳 Improve outdoor spaces for local events and community use. An Olympic and Paralympic Games is about more than the five weeks of sporting activities. It's a once in a generation opportunity for the host city to leave a legacy for the community. It was the topic of legacy building that Populous Senior Principal Shaun Gallagher discussed at the Beyond Brisbane 2032 event hosted by TACTIC and Inertia Engineering, where he took attendees on a journey through the transformation that had taken place to revitalize London's East End. Little more than a decade after the London Games, a once-forgotten brownfield site in Stratford has been transformed—now home to 12,000 people and soon to employ 40,000. Beyond business, it also sparked the development of civic amenities, including a 500-acre park, two primary schools, a secondary school, and three health centers, as well as a major cultural precinct. Shaun worked on the London 2012 Olympic bid team and saw first-hand the legacy that was left through new and improved community infrastructure. He was previously involved in the Review of the Beijing National Stadium for the 2008 Olympic Games as well as the benchmarking and masterplanning studies for Beijing, and helped deliver the overlay planning for the Sydney 2000 Olympics Games. Timelapse footage shows One New Zealand Stadium at Te Kaha rising into the Christchurch skyline. Work on the stadium for Christchurch City Council remains on track for an April 2026 opening, the installation of roof supports beginning to reveal the facility's impressive scale. Populous designed the multi-use arena with a permanently fixed roof so that the venue can be used throughout the year. Ordinarily, this would mean the need for an artificial playing surface. However, having previously designed Forsyth Barr Stadium, which is the world’s first permanently covered stadium to have a natural grass playing field, Populous was able to utilize this expertise to ensure One New Zealand Stadium at Te Kaha achieves the same success. Cutting-edge materials used in the roof will allow natural light onto the field, while computer modelling has been used to ensure enough light gets through for grass to grow healthily. #stadiumdesign BESIX Watpac
