An Olympic and Paralympic Games is about more than the five weeks of sporting activities. It's a once in a generation opportunity for the host city to leave a legacy for the community.
It was the topic of legacy building that Populous Senior Principal Shaun Gallagher discussed at the Beyond Brisbane 2032 event hosted by TACTIC and Inertia Engineering, where he took attendees on a journey through the transformation that had taken place to revitalize London's East End.
Little more than a decade after the London Games, a once-forgotten brownfield site in Stratford has been transformed—now home to 12,000 people and soon to employ 40,000. Beyond business, it also sparked the development of civic amenities, including a 500-acre park, two primary schools, a secondary school, and three health centers, as well as a major cultural precinct.
Shaun worked on the London 2012 Olympic bid team and saw first-hand the legacy that was left through new and improved community infrastructure. He was previously involved in the Review of the Beijing National Stadium for the 2008 Olympic Games as well as the benchmarking and masterplanning studies for Beijing, and helped deliver the overlay planning for the Sydney 2000 Olympics Games.
