Today, Smart City Expo World Congress arrives in #Barcelona. Thanks to Metropolis, Asociación Mundial de las Grandes Metrópolis to give us the chance to explain how from Àrea Metropolitana de Barcelona (AMB) we think of urbanization and digitalization as two interconnected shifts. Technology is not a neutral issue so we should ask first for whom we are building cities to. And what kind of cities we want for the future. Rather than a 🪄magic wound for perfect solutions we consider technology as a tool to achieve a better democracy.

This will be a great conference. Imagine two huge halls, filled to the ceiling with stands and people, where the world's most advanced Smart Cities technologies are presented. National booths everywhere, multinational corporations and luxurious spaces of the world's most innovative companies, from Microsoft to Dell, from Medina to Seoul, from the US to China. And do you know where the most visitors gather? At the Czech stand! Ministerstvo průmyslu a obchodu České republiky, together with other ministries, 20 companies and three cities, presented a stand that really attracts a lot of attention and interest from visitors, not only with its great technologies, but also with its excellent warm atmosphere (maybe the draft beer is a bit to blame).  It is an honour to participate in Smart City Expo World Congress 2024 in Barcelona, where, among other things, we managed to bring 13 representatives of leading Ukrainian institutions that are dedicated to urban renewal, reconstruction and modernisation. We hope that this opportunity will help to establish valuable contacts, create functional consortia and bring new ideas for the modernization of Ukrainian cities, municipalities and communities. 🤞

One of my favorite persons is #CarlotaPerez. She is specialized in technology and socio-economic development. She researches the concept of Techno-Economic Paradigm Shifts and the theory of great surges, a further development of Schumpeter's work on Kondratieff waves. To put it simple; she is convinced technology leads to social and economic change. And for me she nails it. In my lifetime I have witnessed the impact of technology on society, both from a social and economic dimension. I still remember 1991. Me and my two brothers were studying in three different countries And we used a university network, which was the base for the later Internet. So we coded and sent mails to each other and it only took 24 hours to get them across. That was cool at that time. It sounds lame in 2024… The PC, internet, social, cloud, and now AI. They all have and still are impacting society. Not per definition for the good however. But now, with the Paris Olympics behind us I want to point out a technology development I find extremely cool. It is not new, but becoming more and more mainstream. So it was also at the Olympics, windsurfing with foils. And that went fast. But the America’s cup is getting closer and with foils they go like lightning.  And I am proud that we are sponsoring this event. Technology development in sailing has determined for centuries the power in the world. Probably originated by the Egyptians, more than 5000 years ago and optimized further by the Greeks, the Vikings, the Spanish, the Dutch, the Portuguese, and the English. They dominated the world because of their sailing capabilities. Whoever sailed the world ruled the world. For me the Perez theory at work. But that power of that Technology had his end date. With steamships sailing vessels became something for recreation and sports. And as a sailor I enjoy the recreational part of it. No foils for me though, too bloody scary but I love the innovation. So after 5000 years we have this innovation in sailing. Small carbon blades which lift boats overruling Bernoulli’s law. And yes, this innovation will not lead to economic and/or social change. Come to Osaka 😉 In preparation for the 2025 Osaka Expo, several improvements are being made to the Osaka Metro, aiming to increase speed and efficiency ❣️ 1. Osaka Metro Chūō Line Extension The Chūō Line will be extended to Yumeshima Station for the 2025 Expo, improving access to the venue. 2. New Stations New stations, including Yumeshima, will be built to improve accessibility for everyone. 3. Increased Capacity Train frequency will increase, and special services will be added to handle Expo crowds.
