Ever wondered how to transform a standard passenger vehicle into an automated drifting one? In current experimental research, automated drifting is often achieved using hardware-modified vehicles, which aren't safe for everyday driving. To address this, we have developed a nonlinear model predictive control that allows a standard BMW M3 to perform conventional driving manoeuvres and transition smoothly while stabilising it at a high vehicle sideslip angle. Our work, titled "A Nonlinear Model Predictive Control for Automated Drifting with a Standard Passenger Vehicle," was developed by Stan M., Alberto Bertipaglia, and Barys Shyrokau. We recently presented it at AIM 2024 in Boston (USA), where it was nominated for the Best Conference Paper award! Interested in learning more? ■ Imelda Labbé has been appointed as the new president of the Association of International Motor Vehicle Manufacturers (VDIK)! She will now take over from Andre Schmidt, who has guided the association through the transition period since the end of August. ■ During the VDIK annual press conference today, market representatives shared their analysis and forecast for the German passenger car market in 2025. International motor vehicle manufacturers expect around 2.85 million new passenger car registrations for the upcoming year. This anticipated slight increase is primarily driven by strong growth in battery-electric vehicles (BEVs). The confidence in drive technology, economic affordability, and the availability of charging infrastructure will play a crucial role in determining whether consumers are willing and able to transition to climate-neutral drives as quickly as projected for 2025. Ultimately, the number of newly registered battery-electric vehicles next year will largely depend on the existing framework conditions.
