#InternationalDayOfPersonsWithDisabilities As we approach the International Day of Persons with Disabilities, we reflect on why inclusive development is essential. Nogning Armelle Aimerique, the Chair of the Coordinating Unit of Associations of Persons with Disabilities in Cameroon reminds us that persons with disabilities know their challenges best: “When we’re involved, we can find the right solutions.” At CBM, we are proud to collaborate with over 255 Organisations of Persons with Disabilities (OPDs), ensuring their voices are integral to shaping projects that change lives. Stay tuned for more stories of impact. #IDPWD2024 #InclusionMatters #Leadership #DisabilityInclusion

Did you know that 1.3 billion people – 16 percent of the global population – have a significant disability? I love these 6 principles, which should guide our work no matter what sector we work in: 1) Be ambitious – build inclusion into every phase from the start 2) If it’s not working – change it! 3) Shatter stereotypes and break down barriers 4) Collect precise data and track your spending 5) Capture changes and tell your story 6) Don’t try to do it alone – form partnerships. Over the last six years, we've raised awareness about inclusion by participating in the UK aid-funded #InclusiveFutures initiative, which has helped more than three million people with disabilities and reached nearly 14 million others. If widely adopted across the #GlobalDev sector, these six principles for inclusive development could transform the lives of millions more people with disabilities worldwide. The ratification of the African Disability Protocol by fifteen (15) Member States of the African Union (AU) and coming into effect of the Protocol on 3 May 2024, is a milestone in the advocacy for the promotion and protection of the rights of persons with disabilities (PWDs) in Africa. The Protocol will complement the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD) in the promotion, protection, and fulfillment of the rights of PWDs in Africa. This is victory for the PWDs and all advocates of the rights of PWDs in Africa. It is pertinent to state, however, that for the fight and advocacy for the rights of PWDs to be won completely on the Continent, these 15 Member States of the AU should ensure the immediate and holistic implementation of the provisions of the African Disability Protocol. Also, the remaining 40 Member States should immediately proceed to ratify this all-important human rights instrument. Therefore, I call on the rest of the Member States to, without further delays, ratify and implement the African Disability Protocol.
[Press Statement] The Centre for Human Rights, University of Pretoria welcomes the entry into force of the African Disability Protocol as of 3 May 2024. With the ratification by 15 African Union Member States, the Protocol creates a framework for protecting and promoting the rights of persons with disabilities on the continent. This is a significant milestone, but implementation is key! #DisabilityRights #Africa #Inclusion #HumanRights #AfricanDisabilityProtocol' For more information visit:https://lnkd.in/dw9ZqzG

🎉 A monumental step forward for disability rights in Africa! 🎉 The African Disability Protocol has officially entered into force, marking a pivotal moment for the disability rights movement across the continent. This protocol mirrors the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (UNCRPD) by promoting the rights, dignity, and inclusion of persons with disabilities. However, its implementation at a national level is monumental, as it is tailored to address the specific challenges faced by persons with disabilities in Africa. For South Africa, this is a particularly significant development, but there’s still work to be done. While the protocol sets a strong framework, we must ensure that domestic legislation is introduced and enforced to support its provisions and make accessibility and inclusion a reality for all South Africans with disabilities. Let’s celebrate this achievement, but also recognize the ongoing work required to ensure that these rights are fully realized! #DisabilityRights #AfricanDisabilityProtocol #Accessibility #Inclusion #HumanRights #SouthAfrica

“My voice matters because as young people, we should be involved and we should contribute. We should contribute to ensure that the world is a better place for all of us. The voice and needs of young people should be fully reflected, so that we have a better world." We cannot have inclusive societies if people with disabilities, especially young people with disabilities, are excluded from decision-making. At the #HLPF Basiru demanded that decision-makers address this imbalance by consulting and including young people with disabilities in the Summit of the Future and beyond. The future must be inclusive for all people, especially for young people with disabilities. https://lnkd.in/eJWU2-rn #EqualWorld

My advocacy began on a small scale in women and youth spaces and at international conferences like the Internet Governance Forum and RightsCon. However, being identified by the National Union of Disabled Persons of Uganda to lead sessions on ‘Enhancing Knowledge Management, ICT Adaptation, and Digital Skilling Among Persons with Disabilities’ gave me the opportunity to share my experiences, insights, and knowledge of ICT accessibility features with a broader community of people with disabilities. Along the way, I picked up several lessons that have significantly improved my facilitation, presentation, and advocacy skills. https://lnkd.in/dZKykd3j #DisabilityInclusion #DigitalInclusion #Technology #a11y

I attended a thought-provoking webinar today where my colleague Rasak Adekoya moderated a session at UN Nairobi on "Business Leadership on Disability Rights as Human Rights" as part of the 3rd African Business and Human Rights Forum. The session highlighted the importance of human rights, particularly labor rights, for persons with disabilities, a marginalized group that deserves protection and promotion. Leading companies in the African business community are increasingly committed to including people with disabilities in their policies, programs, and workforces. MNEs, regional, and national companies, as well as SMEs in Africa, are taking significant steps towards greater inclusivity. #DisabilityRights #HumanRights #BusinessLeadership #Inclusion.
