I attended a thought-provoking webinar today where my colleague Rasak Adekoya moderated a session at UN Nairobi on "Business Leadership on Disability Rights as Human Rights" as part of the 3rd African Business and Human Rights Forum. The session highlighted the importance of human rights, particularly labor rights, for persons with disabilities, a marginalized group that deserves protection and promotion. Leading companies in the African business community are increasingly committed to including people with disabilities in their policies, programs, and workforces. MNEs, regional, and national companies, as well as SMEs in Africa, are taking significant steps towards greater inclusivity. #DisabilityRights #HumanRights #BusinessLeadership #Inclusion.

The ratification of the African Disability Protocol by fifteen (15) Member States of the African Union (AU) and coming into effect of the Protocol on 3 May 2024, is a milestone in the advocacy for the promotion and protection of the rights of persons with disabilities (PWDs) in Africa. The Protocol will complement the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD) in the promotion, protection, and fulfillment of the rights of PWDs in Africa. This is victory for the PWDs and all advocates of the rights of PWDs in Africa. It is pertinent to state, however, that for the fight and advocacy for the rights of PWDs to be won completely on the Continent, these 15 Member States of the AU should ensure the immediate and holistic implementation of the provisions of the African Disability Protocol. Also, the remaining 40 Member States should immediately proceed to ratify this all-important human rights instrument. Therefore, I call on the rest of the Member States to, without further delays, ratify and implement the African Disability Protocol.
[Press Statement] The Centre for Human Rights, University of Pretoria welcomes the entry into force of the African Disability Protocol as of 3 May 2024. With the ratification by 15 African Union Member States, the Protocol creates a framework for protecting and promoting the rights of persons with disabilities on the continent. This is a significant milestone, but implementation is key! #DisabilityRights #Africa #Inclusion #HumanRights #AfricanDisabilityProtocol' For more information visit:https://lnkd.in/dw9ZqzG

ILO Global Business and Disability Network I am happy that I was a speaker at the 3rd African Business and Human Rights Forum at United Nations Nairobi. My key highlights are: 1. PWDs bring value and unique strengths to the workplace, so businesses should strive to be more inclusive. 2. Youths with disabilities should be at the forefront of business and innovative solutions tailored to the needs of people with disabilities. 3. There is ability in disability and the wider society should focus on the productivity and not the limitations that come with a disability. 4. Inclusion is costly but exclusion is more costly and businesses should strive to create conducive environments that have reasonable accommodation. inABLE Irene Mbari-Kirika, CPACC, O.G.W, GMAP Paul Agbai Srilakshmi Subramanyam Yetnebersh Nigussie Molla Lily Ronoh-Waweru

Today, we’re joining the European Disability Forum’s conference “Equality in Europe - progress and challenges” together with the EU officials and civil society. Our Advocacy Director Katrin Hugendubel will talk at the panel to discuss the progress regarding #equality and fundamental rights during this Commission mandate and what remains to be done in the next. Our message is clear: the #EU needs to take action to address gaps in equality and introduce comprehensive legal protection against discrimination so no one is left behind. The next #EC President needs to nominate a Commissioner with a strong mandate on equality and fundamental rights, commit to a #LGBTIQ Equality Strategy beyond 2025 and establish an LGBTIQ envoy in the Commission to strengthen the work. #unionofequality #europeancommission #europeanunion

We are joining Disabled Peoples' Organisations and calling for the Scottish Government to prioritise the needs of disabled people in Scotland. Read about the three key asks here https://buff.ly/3UhvJyS and join us to support. Disabled women face significant marginalisation in the labour market, and their experiences are often overlooked in policymaking and employer practice. We need inclusive policies that consider gender and disability together. #DisabledPeopleDemandJustice Glasgow Disability Alliance Disability Equality Scotland Inclusion Scotland

📗Very interesting and useful report “Gender equality and disability inclusion. Guidelines to address the specific needs of women and girls with disabilities” was published by Asian Development Bank in May 2024 - 👇 https://lnkd.in/dSJGCq_a 🔸️The purpose of these guidelines’ preparation was to inform about key issues that create barriers for #women and #girls with #disabilities in development programs and to provide an understanding of strategies to #empowerwomen with disabilities in their roles as community members, family members, workers, and leaders in all aspects of society. 🔹️This publication will be useful for representatives of governments and civil society in strengthening #gender- and #disability-responsive #development, in particular, in addressing the needs, concerns, and empowerment of women and girls with disabilities in the #infrastructure of #water, #sanitation, and hygiene (#WASH); #urbandevelopment and #transport; the #social sectors of #education, #health, and #social protection. ❗👉Follow us on LinkedIn Edu4Bis B.V.
