European geographical indications are a driving force for development, generating an annual economic value of over 75 billion euros. For AREPO, the association representing 35 regions across 8 european countries and over 850 consortia and producer associations, the issue of environmental sustainability is becoming increasingly central for the next three years. This focus aligns with the Asiago Cheese Protection Consortium, which is already actively engaged in innovative projects like Green Edge to reduce environmental impact and protect biodiversity. Flavio Innocenzi, director of the Asiago Cheese Protection Consortium, recently reappointed as the representative for the 36 PDO and PGI protection consortia in Veneto on the producers' board, will support the presidency aimed at promoting an excellent, sustainable, and competitive production model for geographical indications that contributes to the fight against climate change. #AREPO #PDO #PGI #AsiagoPDOcheese #AsiagoPDO #Veneto #EUquality

JNCC’s CEO, Dr Gemma Harper OBE FAcSS, participated in the UN Trade and Development (UNCTAD) side event yesterday: Bringing Trade and Biodiversity Data to Support Biodiversity and the Global Biodiversity Framework (GBF) at COP16 Colombia. The event, co-organised by the SEI — Stockholm Environment Institute and JNCC, was expertly moderated by UNCTAD’s Lorena Jaramillo. Trade data in relation to biodiversity-derived products are essential to understanding the environmental and socioeconomic impact of trade, and to monitor and evaluate the effectiveness of policy interventions. 🗣️ Gemma set the scene for the session, highlighting the role of land and sea use in commodity production and trade as a major driver of biodiversity loss, and the need for clear, comprehensive and accessible data to support progress towards the GBF targets. Jon Green, SEI, presented the GBF component indicator Global Environmental Impacts of Consumption (GEIC) - a novel indicator developed with JNCC - as a key tool for maximising the benefits from trade and minimising the harm 👉 https://lnkd.in/eEU7V4Up Diego Ricardo Quintero Martínez, UN Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), discussed the Wildlife Crime Report, highlighting the intersection of trafficking and other criminal activity related to the illegal wildlife trade. Lorena presented UNCTAD’s work on the Trade and Biodiversity statistical tool, and its potential to support sustainable trade flows. The session advocated for transparent and comparable data, and advanced understanding of the requirements for progress against GBF Target 16. 🙏 Thanks to all those who attended. 📅 Check out our Delegation Diary for the latest on how we're supporting the UK delegation at the 'People’s COP'! 👉 https://lnkd.in/ev52PfpS UN Biodiversity, Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, GCRF Trade, Development and the Environment Hub (TRADE Hub), York Environmental Sustainability Institute (YESI) #COP16Colombia #TradeDay #PazConLaNaturaleza #TurningScienceIntoAction #ForNaturePeoplePlanet #TogetherForNature 💚

2002 was the year when the #conservation community and Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) adopted the first set of global #biodiversity targets during the COP in The Hague for the period 2002-2010. This prompted the Parties to develop/revise their National Biodiversity Strategies and Action Plans (NBSAPs) to align them with the new targets. I was the Head of IUCN Regional Biodiversity Programme – Asia at that time and we prepared the attached document “Financing NBSAPs” in 2002. Surprised to see how relevant the approaches, issues and options are for financing the Kunming Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework (KMGBF). Is it that we have not moved from where we were in 2002? Are we re-inventing the wheel? Are the issues and challenges the same for the past 22 years? I am confused !! #environmentalfinancing #biodiversity #NBSAPs #conservation #financing #publicfinance #privatefinance #blendedfinance @theGEF United Nations Environment Programme Finance Initiative (UNEP FI) @UNEnvironment Anita de Horde Jessica Smith Camille Maclet Gregory Watson Elizabeth Mrema Marina von Weissenberg Carlos Manuel Rodriguez IUCN WWF Jeremy Eppel Andrew Deutz

🌍 The private sector and governments must lead the way to the implementation of the EU Deforestation Regulation (#EUDR)! 🌱 Here’s what we take away from the current negotiations around the 1-year postponement of the EUDR. ✅ Progressive private action matters. No matter the outcome of the negotiations, companies across the globe must not slow down their preparation. They should head-start the implementation of the upcoming rules now. Jointly, we must show that ambitious deforestation-free supply chains are achievable in practice. This is the time for private sector leadership. ✅Collaboration across the globe is needed. The EUDR will play a crucial role in halting deforestation worldwide. So will many other local, national and international initiatives. The Group of 20 (G20) has highlighted the importance of forests and the need for joint efforts to their conservation in the final declaration launched by the Brazilian presidency last week ( ➡️ https://lnkd.in/gf56FbG3). We can halt deforestation, but only together! ✅Support must be massively expanded. More financial and technical support to implement the EUDR is necessary. A focus on creating benefits and new business opportunities in forest regions and countries, especially for small farmers and communities, is needed. The societal costs of losing more forests and biodiversity surpass by far the cost for a massive expansion of support! 🌟 Call to Action: We urge progressive businesses and policymakers to lead by example. Let us not slow down but show leadership for active preparation, collaboration and support for implementing the EUDR and other measures to halt deforestation around the globe. Deforestation-free value chains are within reach, but every day counts. Let’s act now to protect our planet, biodiversity, and future resilience. ❓ What has happened: The last weeks have shown that the EU’s ambition to protect the world’s forests from EU-related agricultural supply chains is in danger. The EU Commission, Parliament and Council are all in favour of delaying the start of application of the EUDR by one year. They are however still negotiating a proposal by the EU Parliament to introduce a “no-risk” category. #EUDR #Deforestation #SustainableSupplyChains #ClimateAction #BusinessLeadership Louise Simon Dr. Elisabeth Hoch Sofia Helena Zanella Carra, PhD Louisa von Essen

✅In line with WAJ call for a Global Ban on Factory Farming led by CIWF, Plant-Based diets are promoted for sustainability to 'save resources', with 'Strong economic incentives' to be adopted 'for food industry and consumers'. A key evolution in the new Sustainable Developement Report! 👉 Read the 2024 Sustainable Developement Report here: https://lnkd.in/dxicmn4i "Currently, 38% of total cropland and 30% of water for agriculture is used for animal feed, so limiting protein consumption to recommended levels and increasing the share of proteins derived from plants saves resources. Many countries have taken the opportunity of renewing their Dietary Guidelines to promote healthy and sustainable diets, including Brazil, Germany, and Sweden. This effort must be pursued in other countries and accompanied by strong economic incentives for the food industry and consumers." ❌ Despite this way forward, "animals" are only referred to as "animal stocks", "animal products" or "animal-based products". Still a hard work to do before animals to be protected for themselves in view of this reifying approach... ❓ Discover why WAJ asks to end Factory-Farming Zoocide as a priority to End Animal Crimes here: https://lnkd.in/d5NyUPvc ➡Support CIWF call to End.it in signing here! https://ciwf.end.it/sign/ #PlantProteins #SustainableDevelopment #BanFactoryFarming #CIWF #Endit #EndAnimalCrimes #WorldAnimalJustice
