With support from the World Wide Fund for Nature-Kenya, the people of Loitokitok have embraced water and soil conservation to restore the landscape, helping the land retain much-needed nutrients, enhance water retention, and reduce soil erosion.  ☝ Through IICA and AGRA, Latin America and the Caribbean and Africa strengthen cooperation to promote agricultural sustainability in two regions that are key to food security and conservation 👉The Alliance for a Green Revolution in Africa (AGRA) and the Inter-American Institute for Cooperation on Agriculture (IICA) have underscored their decision to work together to enhance the role of Africa and Latin America and the Caribbean as territories that are key to guaranteeing the planet’s food security and environmental sustainability 🌿 🤝 AGNES KALIBATA President of AGRA, and Manuel Otero, Director General of IICA, took part in an online discussion with Jack A Bobo, Director of the Food Systems Institute at the University of Nottingham, in the United Kingdom 🇬🇧 🗨In the dialogue all three agreed that the two continents need to deepen their reciprocal collaboration ☝ And that agriculture should be viewed as part of the solution to the challenges facing humanity; and not only for tackling the problem of food security, but also for the energy transition that is underway. They are both also winners of our Young Think Tankers contest! Their research will focus on how efforts to enforce sustainability standards may disproportionately burden small farmers in the #GlobalSouth, due to limited technical and financial capacity to comply with the requirements. 🧑🌾🌎 It will explore how these conditions impose unintended non-tariff barriers (NTBs) to farmers who depend on agriculture for their livelihoods, leading to increased household #poverty and exacerbating low productivity in #agriculture. Glad to have contributed to this piece highlighting the importance of using GIS and spatial technologies for capturing, analyzing, and visualizing spatial data and to monitor land-use changes, forest degradation, and ecosystem health in newly emerging carbon credit markets such as the African Carbon Markets Initiative.
