Our fourth and final presenting portfolio company at our Innovation Showcase is Emm, the start-up whose mission is to empower individuals to change their quality of life by inherently understanding their health through technology and specialist knowledge. Less than 2.5% of publicly funded research is dedicated solely to reproductive health, yet 1 in 3 women will suffer from a reproductive or gynaecological health problem. Clinical baseline data is key for tracking reproductive health, but neither consumers nor clinicians have the tools to accurately measure this. Founded by CEO, Jenny Button, Emm has built biometric technology to bring this data to the 1/3 of women with severe reproductive health symptoms. Their technology can monitor key metrics like volume, flow rate, cycle length and regularity to aid understanding of menstrual health. US President Joe Biden recent executive order signals a pivotal moment for women's health research. With a substantial $200 million investment across multiple agencies, the US administration is prioritizing crucial gaps in women's health, particularly post-menopausal conditions like arthritis and heart disease. This bold initiative encompasses directives spanning key departments, emphasizing the potential of artificial intelligence in advancing women's health research. Yet, despite its promise, the femtech industry often faces visibility challenges. As PR professionals, we play a vital role in amplifying the voices of femtech innovators and advocating for policies supporting women's health research. By leveraging our platforms, we can drive visibility, funding, and support for this critical sector. Investing in femtech isn't just about improving health outcomes—it's about empowering women, saving lives, and building a more equitable future for all. #Femtech #WomensHealth #PRCanSaveLives

Nice to see Rachel Bartholomew of Hyivy Health in this article by The Guardian about the disadvantages the women behind femtech are facing including: - a misconception that the market is too niche (it isn't, women are 51% of the population with control of 80% of the healthcare spend) - censorship, not being able to use the medical terms for for women's bodies and conditions (double standard since it is fine to use the words for men's bodies) stymying marketing and education efforts - funding, the UK and US government are now starting to fill in the gaps left by the lack of VC funding, but we need additional sources of funding https://lnkd.in/e3QuQPQb #womenshealthequity #healthinnovation #femtech

Women continue to be underrepresented in high-risk medical implant trials, with a median participation rate of just 33%. This disparity can affect the reliability of device performance data for women. We must raise awareness and push for better representation in these trials. 🚀 Here's what I learnt from the FemTech Lab Decoding the Future of Women conference... 💡 Broadening the Scope of Women's Health: Women's health is much more than reproductive health. The uterus, ovaries, vagina, and vulva serve many purposes beyond reproduction. Issues disproportionately affecting women are not solely linked to our reproductive organs. As Eva T. Tarasova pointed out, 80% of those affected by autoimmune conditions are women. We need to expand our horizons and explore broader opportunities within femtech. 🏥 Focusing on Healthspan, Not Just Lifespan: It's not just about how long we live, but how long we live in good health. Extending #healthspan requires effective disease prevention, but we need more research and knowledge in this area. As Jennifer Garrison poignantly stated, “what we fund dictates what we know.” Women's health has been and continues to be underfunded. 🌐 Enhancing Accessibility and Usability: Ensuring a product's success requires a strong focus on #accessibility and #usability. This was a recurrent theme throughout the conference. 📚 Balancing AI with Education: While AI offers numerous opportunities, let's not run before we can walk. We must focus on educating our consumers first and foremost. As Dr Helen O'Neill linked back to reproductive technology, we need to place more emphasis on #education around the preconception journey. 👩⚕️ Collaborating with Clinicians: Close collaboration with clinicians is essential to understand NHS pathways and services, provide easy-to-digest information for consumers, and ensure products are appropriate for their purpose. Dr Orlanda A. highlighted that Femtech companies need to involve clinicians from the start. 🔗 Integration into NHS Pathways: For products such as apps to be truly successful and impactful, integration into NHS pathways and services is crucial. Konrad Dobschuetz emphasized this point. In summary, the FemTech Lab Decoding the Future of Women conference highlighted the importance of a #holistic approach to women's health, the need for increased research and funding, and the critical role of integration and education. Through close collaboration with clinicians, such as myself, and with focus on accessibility and usability, we can drive meaningful advancements in femtech and improve health outcomes for women all over the world. #Femtech #WomensHealth #Innovation #Healthcare #AI #Education #Healthspan #NHS #Collaboration #ReproductiveHealth #Research #Fertility #IVF
