There are many trends that have been accelerated and intensified by COVID-19, either directly or indirectly. But none more so than sustainability within the aviation sector. While building infrastructure may only account for 1% to 10% of an airport’s overall carbon footprint, our responsibility is to reduce this impact to a carbon-zero or even carbon-negative position. And customer and passenger demands are increasingly aligned with these ambitions. For our latest Future Thinking article, Peter Farmer, Benoy Design Director and Aviation Lead, discusses Benoy’s work within the aviation sector and our approach to sustainable airport design. #sustainabledesign #airportdesign #sustainableairports #aviationdesign #designingthefuture #placesforpeople https://lnkd.in/eVgydnqq

Evening Innovations on the St. Lawrence: The CSL Welland Passes Through 🌅🚢 Last night, we had the privilege of witnessing the CSL Welland passing through the St. Lawrence Seaway—a true representation of maritime innovation and Canadian craftsmanship. Innovation on the Water: The CSL Welland, a Trillium Class bulk carrier, is equipped with cutting-edge technology that enhances fuel efficiency and reduces emissions. Its real-time digital data monitoring system optimizes fuel consumption and speed, showcasing how the maritime industry is embracing sustainability 🌍💡. The Story Behind the Mural: Beyond its technical prowess, the CSL Welland carries an inspiring story through the mural, The Runners, painted on its accommodation deck. This mural, created in collaboration with artists from across Canada, symbolizes the shared values of diversity, collaboration, and perseverance. The project not only reflects Canadian values but also underscores the importance of art in expressing collective identity and resilience 🎨🇨🇦. 🧑🏻✈️⛴️. A Navigator’s Perspective: It was only the CSL Welland passing by, but witnessing such an innovative vessel cross in the evening was a sight to behold. This moment not only highlighted the ship’s advanced features but also provided an opportunity to delve into the fascinating story behind its murals. CSL’s initiative to showcase Canadian values through this artwork reflects their commitment to celebrating diversity, collaboration, and perseverance—principles that are as crucial at sea as they are on land 🌊🚢. 🤖🦾. AI in Action: We were able to witness this passage not simply by chance, but through the use of real-time maritime applications that track shipping movements. Many of these applications are powered by AI, which can identify and recognize vessels at a distance, well before they are visible to the human eye. This technology enhances safety, planning, and operational efficiency, proving once again how AI is transforming industries 🌐🤖. Efficiency in Action: Maritime shipping is a cornerstone of our economy, and vessels like the CSL Welland demonstrate that innovation can go hand in hand with environmental stewardship. By reducing air emissions and optimizing fuel efficiency, the CSL Welland is contributing to a more sustainable future for our waters and beyond 🌿🚢. Environmental Impact: The St. Lawrence Seaway is a vital trade route, open for only a part of the year, which greatly facilitates trade while significantly reducing CO2 emissions compared to road transport. The efficiency of moving large quantities of goods via water is unparalleled, underscoring the importance of sustainable maritime practices. #Sustainability #MaritimeInnovation #CanadaSteamshipLines #CSLWelland #Digitalization #AI #GreenShipping #CanadianValues #ArtAndInnovation

[Exact Systems Romania] This week, our colleagues Alexandra Șerban and Raul Toma attended the Green Mobility Forum 2024 event, organized by The Diplomat & Automotive Today and hosted by Intercontinental Athenee Palace Hilton Bucharest. The forum brought together industry leaders and industry specialists to share expertise and ideas, aiming to analyze sustainable solutions for the future of transportation. We discussed the challenges posed by urbanization and the growing demand for mobility, as well as the progress and solutions within green mobility. It is essential to adopt sustainable transport alternatives designed to reduce environmental impact and carbon emissions, such as electric vehicles and intelligent transport systems. Together, we can contribute to a more efficient and sustainable future of transportation. #GreenMobility #AutomotiveToday #TheDiplomat #Sustainability #FutureOfMobility #ElectricVehicles #SmartTransport

Meet & Match - a Great Step Towards the Amsterdam MoLo Hubs Pilot🚀 The City of Amsterdam hosts the pilot for integrating mobility hubs with hubs for service logistics. This means that spaces must be defined and car parking areas🅿️must be adapted in order to optimise its logistical use. At the end of June various providers of emission-free transport vehicles came together with potential users for a ‘Meet & Match’: Contractors from the construction industry, installation technology and other providers of equipment and technical services.🛠️ During the meeting the project leader Frank Ebbink also pointed out that there is still room in the pilot project for entrepreneurs who want to test alternative transport options in view of the introduction of the low emission zone.🌱 Susanne Balm from the Amsterdam University of Applied Sciences🎓presented a calculation model to the public in which variables such as journey time, time spent ⏱️searching for a parking space and costs for the hub/cargo bike💰could be entered. London Gatwick opened a new rapid exit taxiway, Echo Romeo, on 21st February 2024. The project began life many years ago as a result of listening to pilots - the old exit we replaced wasn't easy to take with modern planes. This led to low predictability of aircraft on the runway, which in turn caused delays and/or go-arounds (when a plane flies around in a circle instead of landing). As a programme manager who was new to the business, picking up the project after Covid had the special challenge of re-assessing where we had got to: - Was it still the right thing to do? - Was the modelling (that was now several years old) still relevant? - Are the assumptions that went into the previous design still correct? Well yes (and we optioneered even more thoroughly this time!), mostly, and... some of them. Given a base layer was put in before Covid, I'm so impressed with the team that re-designed a huge piece of infrastructure (it's about 400m long) for a longer design life with lower Carbon cost, all while 'keeping the foundations the same'. Safety is paramount in aviation for good reason, but construction sites don't always have that same culture. While they did a great job in the other aspects too, perhaps PJ Hegarty & Sons biggest accomplishment was bringing the safety culture to life on site. As a result, people worked more hours on the site than you will work in your entire lifetime, and yet there were no lost time injuries. That's something many offices can't manage! A huge amount of work from a huge number of people went into this, and the result is some very positive feedback from pilots, a more resilient airport operation, and one more step towards an aviation industry that sustainably takes its passengers where they're planning to go, when they planned to get there.
London Gatwick, part of VINCI Airports’ network, has completed an infrastructure project to help reduce delays and go-arounds, as well as supporting the airport’s sustainability targets. Read for more. #sustainabledevelopment #airportinfrastructure #sustainability #emissions
