Media release: ARC reform will strengthen Australia’s research capability. The passing of the Australian Research Council Amendment (Review Response) Bill 2023 will strengthen Australia’s research capability and help ensure the sustainability of our world class research. “The Group of Eight, as the recipient of 70 per cent of ARC funding has driven the substantial governance reform of the ARC, in particular the establishment of an independent ARC Board to approve research grants within the National Competitive Grants Program,” said Go8 CE Vicki Thomson. “The importance of an independent Board cannot be overstated. Depoliticising ARC funding through an independent board strengthens the integrity of decision-making processes and minimises political interference, which has impacted the capacity of our universities to attract and retain world leading researchers.” The Go8 looks forward to working with the ARC on implementing the reforms as well as the important upcoming review of the ARC’s National Competitive Grants Program. Researchers from THE LÄND receive ERC Synergy Grants 👏 The European Research Council (ERC) fund creative researchers carrying out projects across Europe. They enable them to pool their expertise to push the boundaries of scientific discovery. This time, a number of projects from the German Southwest are once again involved. Among others, the research of scientists from the University of Freiburg, Heidelberg and the KIT was awarded. To name just a few of the projects: ▪️The ATHENS project by Professors Christian Koos and Stefan Braese from Karlsruher Institut für Technologie (KIT). The aim is to make optical communication systems more powerful and energy-efficient. This is particularly relevant in view of the increasing demands placed on the transmission of large amounts of data by artificial intelligence applications. ▪️Not one but two professors from the Albert-Ludwigs-Universität Freiburg have been awarded. Jürgen Kleine-Vehn is researching the plant hormone auxin as the key to plant growth as part of STARMORPH and with the BLOCKADE project, Dr. Elisabeth Piller is investigating how the cutting off of resources and their scarcity affected the age of world wars. These are all promising projects and we congratulate the researchers on the funding! 💡 Groundbreaking #ResearchProjects are made possible thanks to third party #funding, and there is no exception for the research done at #FAU. Here, the highest proportion of third-party funding comes from DFG. 📑 In the recently published DFG Funding Atlas 2024 FAU has actually reached seventh place, having received a total of 289,4 million euros from DFG funding between 2020 and 2022. 🔬 “When it comes to DFG funding, FAU is one of the heavyweights in Germany. This is made possible by our researchers, who tirelessly and successfully apply for this funding with their innovative research questions", explains #FAUPresident Prof. Dr. Joachim Hornegger. #FAUProud #FAUResearch ↪️ https://lnkd.in/g4B4PmHC Image: FAU/Anna Tiessen

Last week, Minister of Higher Education and Science Christina Egelund announced two political agreements on the allocation DKK 5.5 billion (USD $780 million) in 2025 to research and innovation to tackle Denmark’s most pressing issues: climate, security, and health. This funding aims to support critical research initiatives that will power a green transition, strengthen national security, and drive health and life sciences forward. By investing heavily in these areas, Denmark is building a future rooted in sustainability, resilience, and improved quality of life for its citizens. Moreover, the initiative has received broad political support, uniting parties across Denmark in a shared commitment to advancing research and innovation for the future. One particularly exciting part of this initiative is the launch of a new quantum postdoc exchange program, a program developed based on input from Innovation Centre Denmark in Silicon Valley and Boston, with 20 million DKK (USD $2.9 million) dedicated to fostering cross-border quantum research. This program will make it possible to further expand the collaboration between Danish and American researchers, opening doors to new discoveries and collaboration in quantum technology. - The new postdoc exchange program will offer a number of early-career quantum researchers the opportunity to conduct part of their research at leading universities in the USA and other countries. We know such exchange stays help establish lasting international connections and networks, which will contribute to strengthening Danish quantum research, says Science Attaché Torben Orla Nielsen and Allan Skårup Kristensen from Innovation Centre Denmark Boston and Innovation Centre Denmark Silicon Valley. We believe it’s crucial to continue building strong links between Denmark and the U.S., and we look forward to the innovative research and projects that will emerge from this robust governmental support.

The results of these latest grants from the ERC clearly illustrate that the programme is less accessible to applicants from countries with lower R&I intenstiy levels. Its is demonstrably evident that the current funding distribution is highly skewed towards more advanced Member States and a revision is necessary to promote inclusivity and excellence across all countries. The EU's next framework programme should introduce specific schemes for Widening countries, ensuring that researchers can participate fully and also benefit from this prestigious programme.
✔️ Supporting young science talent. ✔️ Supporting cutting-edge research. Our European Research Council’s Starting Grants help early-career researchers to pursue their most promising ideas. 📢 The results for this year are out. We have awarded nearly 494 Starting Grants to young scientists and scholars across Europe, with a funding of nearly €780 million. The Guild welcomes the position of the European #Research and #Innovation Committee (#ERAC) on #FP10 adopted last week and its call to keep excellence and transnational collaboration as the cornerstones of the framework programme. Many recommendations of the EU ministries of science echo ours, especially: ⭐ FP10 to fund R&I only, while increasing synergies with other EU programmes, for instance, to accelerate the deployment of new technologies and build capacities in #KnowledgeValorisation. 🔎 Leverage the curiosity and expertise of #researchers to ensure the future-proof #competitiveness and resilience of Europe. This implies making challenge-oriented calls less prescriptive and keeping funding for curiosity-driven research, including through the European Research Council (ERC) and the Marie Curie-Skłodowska Actions. ⚖ Strive for a better balance in funding between #FundamentalResearch and closer-to-market R&D activities, including by introducing ‘research actions’ to fund collaborative fundamental research projects. 🖇 Focus on national investment and reform efforts in #Widening countries coupled by effective use of Cohesion funds. Clear that more data is needed to assess existing instruments in order to support the most successful ones in FP10. 🌐 Enhance collaboration with third countries to strengthen the role of Europe as a global R&I powerhouse with strategic partners in #Africa and beyond. This implies encouraging global collaboration while supporting institutions’ appraisal and management of potential risks. However, The Guild wishes ERAC had taken a stronger position for an ambitious and stable budget for FP10.
