🆕 IGTP joins the Advanced Therapies Network of Catalonia Yesterday, Biocat, BioRegion of Catalonia presented the Advanced Therapies Network, an initiative coordinated by the organisation to promote research and development of these drugs, seeking to generate an economic and social impact in Catalonia. Its aim is to get these therapies to patients faster and project the BioRegion of Catalonia as a global benchmark hub in advanced therapies. The event brought together more than a hundred representatives from various advanced therapies stakeholders in Catalonia: startups and scaleups, production centers, investment funds, hospitals, universities and research centers, companies and the Healthcare System. A total of 45 companies and organisations have already joined the Network, including Germans Trias i Pujol Research Institute (IGTP). 💰 7.7 SEK Million is invested in the Swelife-supported Vinnova-project BRIDGE Sweden, gathering key players from Life Science Sweden’s research infrastructure and innovation system. Pedersen & Partners and CMS Netherlands co-hosted this week’s M&A and Funding in Life Sciences Breakfast Seminar. The event provided a lively and agile atmosphere for representatives of well-known and international life sciences companies and scale-ups to discuss, debate, and network. 👨💼👩💼The event gathered more than 60 decision-makers to ensure a range of perspectives. The panel discussions were led by: Erik van den Berg (CEO, Memo Therapeutics AG); Martijn Boot (Head of Legal, Brocacef); Dr. Jan Groen (CEO, Intravacc); Jos Lunenberg (CEO, Surfix Diagnostics); and Koenraad Wiedhaup (CEO, Leyden Labs). 🎙️ The panel discussion was co-chaired by Pieter van Duijvenvoorde (Partner, Corporate / M&A Practice, CMS Netherlands); Ellen Gielen (Partner, Head of Lifesciences & Healthcare, CMS Netherlands); and Lydia van der Meulen (Client Partner, Head of Life Sciences & Healthcare Practice Group at Pedersen & Partners). The 🔝 takeaways from the event: 💼 M&A, investment and fundraising dynamics: the market has ‘normalised’ and last year proved difficult for fundraising, although there are funding opportunities to be found in the USA and Asia. In terms of deals, there is a noticeable shift to companies that are in a later stage of development. 🌍 External factors: the Netherlands may lose its ability to build innovations by bringing together (international) talent, (international) scientists and capital. 🚫 Regulatory constraints or threats affecting M&A and investments: the upcoming EU Pharma package will result in less access to new medicines for EU member states. 🚀 Exit strategies & market climate: exit strategies should be clear at an early stage. 📢 NEWS: Today AusBiotech and MTPConnect have released a discussion paper on critical life science growth issues ahead of our upcoming National Biotech and Medtech Development and Commercialisation Summit, on 19 November 2024 in Canberra.   Australia's life sciences sector is an essential part of Australia’s economy, supporting high-paying and skilled jobs, manufacturing exports, and underpinning the health and wellbeing of Australians. It is rightly recognised by the Australian Government as a critical sector that is essential for Australia’s future. Yet while we are in the top ten globally for research, we slip down to 30th for the translation and commercialisation of that research. The upcoming Summit will see AusBiotech and MTPConnect gather some of the country’s most senior leaders from a cross-section of the biotech and medtech sector to tackle these issues.    The joint discussion paper launched today unpacks Australian and global policy contexts, stubborn industry challenges, and barriers to achieving robust “Development and Commercialisation” outcomes. MTPConnect CEO Stuart Dignam said the discussion paper and 19 November Summit aim to harness industry insights and create a united voice to government ahead of the 2025 election. “Medical products are one of Australia’s most significant value-add exports, but gaps in biomedical and medical technology product development limit our ability to fully realise the commercial potential of our innovation prowess,” Mr Dignam said. Meeting a unique team was such an honour! ARTHEx Biotech is an EIC Accelerator beneficiary, based in Spain. I met this dynamic and hard working team at their premises in Valencia, where the heart of the company is beating, modulating microRNAs and developing innovative medicines, tailored to patients’ specific needs. EIC Accelerator blended finance is awarded for the development of a brand new treatment to Myotic Dystrophy Type 1 (DM1), an orphan disease affecting more than 900,000 people worldwide (estimated prevalence 1/8,000). This condition has currently no cure, and no approved treatment. A first-in-class disease modifying therapy, ATX-01, developed by ARTHEx, addresses the cause of DM1 with a dual and unique mechanism of action, which targets micro-RNA-23b a key factor in the disease pathogenesis. ARTHEx biotech is a spin-off biotech company from the University of Valencia. They have grown from 1 person in 2019 when the company was founded to a team of 20 right now. The EIC Accelerator grant is used to support Phase I/IIa clinical trial of ATX-01 for DM1. beatriz llamusi PhD, CSO & Co-Founder of ARTHEx biotech mentioned: “This grant empowers us to bridge the gap between foundational scientific research and clinical application, driving the development of ATX-01 for DM1. Sapien’s patient-derived cell models will be discussed at 3R conference on 4th May  Dr. Jugnu Jain, CEO, will be speaking on the use of patient-derived cells (PDC) and tissues for target and drug validation. These model systems represent the true diversity and heterogeneity of human patients and disease compared to transformed cell lines. It's true what you've been hearing through the grapevine: Aarhus is the birthplace of many of the most promising new biotech companies 🌱 The renowned biotech industry media Labiotech.eu confirms this with its ranking of '10 European biotech companies likely to make a big splash in the biotech sector'. On the list, you’ll find two spinouts from Aarhus Universitet – Draupnir Bio and ComMIT Biologics. Draupnir Bio is a spinout from Health - Aarhus University – Aarhus University, founded in 2017, developing new treatments to transform the management of heart disease. ComMIT Biologics is a spinout from Faculty of Natural Sciences - Aarhus University, founded in 2023, developing immunotherapies for the treatment of cancer, among other things.
