'We is we' - a colloquial term used freely throughout the West Indies which speaks to a common understanding of each other, a bond that can not be broken. I can find no more fitting summary or visual, to share with you, to epitomize my feelings at the conclusion of the International Maritime Organization Regional Meeting of Directors/ Heads of Maritime Administrations. The sessions were chock-full of subjects of interest to me. Among them were marine casualty/incident investigation, marine pollution prevention and response and maritime training. What I found most impactful however, was when Professor George Theocharidis of the World Maritime University presented on the need for maritime policy and strategy. We must always be aware of the why that fuels the what and how of our actions. Finally we exchanged reports of our achievements, plans and needs. We unearthed our at times hidden capacity, to bolster each other. We perceived each other in our raw, vulnerable state and with gentle yet pronounced affirmation, declared:- I got you. We is we. We is WI. 🌊 𝗖𝗘𝗜-𝗘𝗦 𝗮𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗘𝗨𝗦𝗔𝗜𝗥 𝗧𝗦𝗚𝟯 𝗠𝗲𝗲𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴: 𝗔𝗱𝘃𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗘𝗻𝘃𝗶𝗿𝗼𝗻𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗹 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝘁𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗳𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝗡𝗔𝗠𝗜𝗥𝗦 𝘁𝗼 𝗔𝗦𝗔𝗣 On November 12th, Central European Initiative - CEI took part in the EUSAIR Pillar 3 Thematic Steering Group on Environmental Quality to present impactful progress on the NAMIRS ⃒ North Adriatic Maritime Incident Response System project and the newly approved ASAP initiative. Thanks to strong collaboration with the EU Strategy for the Adriatic - Ionian Region - EUSAIR Pillar 3 Coordinators and the Facility Point at the Municipality of Izola, CEI-ES successfully secured approval for both projects, directly supporting the EUSAIR Flagship ASOSCOP project and contributing to the new 𝗔𝗗𝗥𝗜𝗔𝗧𝗜𝗖 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴𝗲𝗻𝗰𝘆 𝗣𝗹𝗮𝗻. This plan—crafted with the support of Regional Marine Pollution Emergency Response Centre for the Mediterranean Sea (REMPEC) and six Adriatic countries (Albania, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Croatia, Italy, Montenegro, and Slovenia)—prioritizes rapid response and coordinated action to protect the Adriatic Sea. The Adriatic Sea’s unique geography, as a narrow and semi-enclosed basin, makes it especially vulnerable to environmental threats that can quickly impact multiple countries. Through NAMIRS and now ASAP, we’re working toward establishing robust response systems to safeguard this crucial resource, ensuring it supports sustainable #bluegrowth. 🚂 Rail Baltica, the ambitious railway project set to connect the Baltic states as part of Europe’s modern rail network, promises to boost regional development and integration. But despite assurances that habitats would be protected during the construction of Rail Baltica, forests in protected areas have been cut down. This threatens the future of the western capercaillie, a protected grouse species. The Rail Baltica project is just one of many alarming cases wreaking havoc on Estonia’s precious ecosystems and yet another example of economic development taking precedence over environmental concerns. The general objectives of WAT’SAVEREUSE is to explain the benefits of water legislation and national initiatives to promote the circular economy in water consumption, especially in the tourism sector, with the aim of both water saving such as water reuse, with special emphasis on the Mediterranean environment. The project will help alleviate the identified environmental problem (water scarcity and drought) by conducting informed awareness campaigns aimed at four target groups and defining better policies with a clear impact.
