It's been an exciting time for Tencent with the launch of Dungeon & Fighter Mobile in China. As someone who played DNF Online more than a decade ago, it's amazing to see this franchise evolve and thrive. In its first month alone, Dungeon & Fighter Mobile generated an impressive $270 million on iOS, outperforming even the stalwart Honor of Kings. This performance is particularly noteworthy, not just for the revenue, but for the innovative strategies Tencent employed. Tencent bypassed traditional app stores, opting instead to distribute the game directly through WeChat and third-party platforms like TapTap. This bold move helped them avoid the hefty commissions and retain greater control over the user experience. The marketing campaign was equally innovative. By partnering with popular actor Dilraba Dilmurat and seamlessly integrating ads into WeChat conversations, Tencent maximized engagement and reach. Analysts are now predicting annual revenues of up to $2.6 billion for Dungeon & Fighter Mobile, making it clear that Tencent has discovered a new flagship franchise. We've proved that we can get consumers to move away from the larger controller brands that have dominated the gaming scene for 10+ years. We are building a BRAND with an actual COMMUNITY. Quick caveat, to further prove my point about not really caring about the money, nobody has taken a PENNY from IN CNTRL. Every single last dime has gone straight back into product development, marketing costs and the team. This might not seem like much to people over the course of a year but the brand has taken a huge leap this year. We're on track to launch 4-5 new creator campaigns in the UK & US in October too, which is mental. People actually want to go as far as promote us 🥰 This is no longer proof of concept. It's time to take over.

aming firm Light & Wonder is expanding its lineup of online casino offerings through some new partnerships lately. In 2022 we reported the software provider’s acquisition of Plazido. L&W is also partners with live casino brand Authentic Gaming. Now the company’s ambitions are spreading far and wide with a series of new deals! The company has teamed up with a couple of game developers, RubyPlay and Everi Digital, to add over 170 new games to its platform—stuff like slots and other casino titles. These deals give Light & Wonder a bigger catalog to offer gambling sites it partners with globally. In another deal, Light & Wonder signed an exclusive agreement with a UK company called 1X2 Network to distribute 1X2’s games in Michigan. This will introduce 1X2’s slots, virtual sports, instant win games to the US for the first time, starting in Michigan but with plans to expand into more states soon. On the tech side of things, Light & Wonder is investing in a startup named Flows that has built a no-code platform that lets gaming companies automate processes without needing engineering talent. Flows even uses AI for voice-controlled building of products. JMP Securities analysts are optimistic about Flutter Entertainment ’s recent acquisition of a 56% stake in NSX Group, arguing that it would allow the latter company to drive strong synergies in Brazil. According to a NEXT.io report, JMP Securities believes that Brazil’s large population and ongoing sports betting regulation will be a catalyst for success. Flutter, for context, just acquired a 56% stake in Betnacional’s parent company, NSX Group. This arrangement, expected to close in early 2025 and subject to regulatory approvals, would combine Betfair Brazil’s operations into NSX, creating a new entity called Flutter Brazil. Aristocrat Gaming has inched closer to acquiring NeoGames as the Nevada Gaming Control Board recommended the approval of the transaction. The matter will be officially settled at the board’s upcoming meeting on April 18, CDC Gaming Reports reported. NeoGames was founded in 2014 and, in 2023, secured a license to operate in Nevada. The company later received a takeover bid by Aristocrat, which wants to explore the online lottery sector and expand its overall iGaming presence. The arrangement will see Aristocrat pay $1.5 billion in cash to acquire the Israel-based ilottery platform. The transaction is set to reinforce the former company’s activities in key regions, such as Europe and North America. Under the deal, Aristocrat will also acquire the Aspire Core online gaming platform, the iGaming content aggregator Pariplay and the B2B sportsbook services provider BtoBet. All of NeoGames’ existing employees will be transferred to Aristocrat and put through rigorous compliance training. I gave AoE mobile the old college try without assumptions, knowing they have to change the formula for a mobile format. I, too, have uninstalled. Here’s why: 1. Disingenuous marketing- acts like it’s regular AoE gameplay (it isn’t) 2. Disingenuous tutorial- pretends it’s regular AoE gameplay (they really hit this “sin” hard) 3. Unoriginal gameplay- same stuff that has been around for years, but with AoE skin over it (nostalgic SFX really hook you) 4. Fomo mechanics- if you don’t habitually log in multiple times a day, you’re missing out (this could also be called “disrespecting player time” & “not casual friendly”) 5. Gatcha game (heroes)- clearly a situation where pay to win AND power creep will keep a carrot on a stick infront of players. Predatory, unbalanced, and fosters vice. Bonus: Fiction- That’s right, straight up fictional characters on a fictional timeline not even trying to portray history. I don’t know what they were thinking, there’s SO many real people to draw from. (Note: half the hero roster is real historical figures and half is this fictional stuff) If anyone is curious how much content I saw, I paid a few bucks for a third builder, got my city to full lvl 10, got a few heroes to lvl 40 and 6/7 star pieces, participated in guild activities including taking a major town on the world map and pvp. Did everything I could for dailies, events, promotions, spending all energy as often as I could for nearly a week. There is fun to be had, but overall unfulfilled promises, unoriginal mechanics (not even the 80/20 rule, feels like 100/0) and predatory mechanics make me not want to support this game, despite being a huge AoE fan and wanting to see more success in my industry.
