There are so many posts here on LinkedIn about restoring the Water Cycle as a topic little covered in conversations around regenerative farming and ranching, as though the Water Cycle is somehow unrelated to the Carbon Cycle, or Energy Cycle, or any other specific cycle, or living soil for that matter. The essence of all regenerative ag is first that one fully understands the context in which they live and operate. By focusing on an understanding of the 6 Principles of Soil Health, 3 Rules of Adaptive Stewardship, and 4 Ecosystem Processes (TM), we can then determine which regenerative tools are best to use within our context to bring soil back to life.   There really is no dichotomy, no "either focus on soil or water." Regenerative agriculture is truly a "both. . . and" construct. Do you farm or ranch, or both, in a brittle or water restricted environment/context? Have you checked out "Right Relations For Our Climate Future" panel discussion in collaboration with Animal Agriculture Reform Collaborative? This clip is just a brief peek into the dynamic discussion on alternative approaches to factory farmed products and heavily processed plant-based foods. We were joined by Lucille Contreras of Texas Tribal Buffalo Project, Jessica Swan of Agri-Cultura Network and Rubi Orozco Santos of La Semilla Food Center. This discussion highlighted what is possible inside of climate justice and agricultural reform through cultural respect and preservation, an emphasis on Indigenous systems and land-based practices. Strategies to build soil health and achieve good yields were in focus at our 'Cropping for plant and soil health' field day yesterday at Will McInnes' farm near Goondiwindi, QLD, and we launched our Biological Seed Treatments Practice Guide, the first of ten upcoming Guides on regenerative cropping practices! Read on for reflections on the day… In partnership with the @macintyre.ag.alliance, over 40 attendees gathered in the shed and the paddock to talk about plant and soil health. Will shared his farming journey and the events that led to him choosing to build up his plant and soil health knowledge. He shared the practices that have been working for him to produce well-yielding grain crops, including: 🌾Seed treatments 🌾Multispecies cover crops 🌾Fine-tuning fertiliser inputs and bolstering plant nutrition as a first line of defence against pests and diseases. The panel session explored topics that ranged from how to find the right information and support when transitioning to new practices, commercial scale on farm trials and emerging ESG and market requirements. Biological agronomist, Marco Giorgio Rego presented on minerals, microbes and management. Alongside Marco, the Soil for Life team took a deep dive into soil health monitoring. Some discussions on this topic included: 🔎 Inspecting the plants and the soil surface can give visual clues for what may be going on below ground 🔎 Aggregate stability tests can be helpful to understand overall soil structural health 🔎 Have you considered the soil variation within and between paddocks? We took soil cores at the high and low points of Will’s melon hole country to investigate the differences. A big thank you to Will McInnes for hosting the day and sharing his knowledge with us. Our 2024/25 protocol is here. The protocol is the document that guides what we measure, and how we measure it. Over 6 months, we integrated feedback from: Over 500 farmers NGOs including WWF-UK and National Trust The Exchange Farmer Advisory board The Exchange Science Advisory board The result is an upgraded methodology that includes vital new metrics like Soil Cover %, Food Production and Nutrient Balances. Plus improvements to how we measure many of the metrics across all our 6 impact areas of soil health, carbon, biodiversity, animal welfare , water and social. Our top priority was developing a protocol that truly benefits farmers. The metrics we use must help farmers access financial rewards, make practical improvements, and be straightforward to implement. The aim being to ensure Exchange is accessible to all farmers, regardless of their type or scale of operation.
