CeNTI participates in a new European project focused on circular bioenergy systems. Called COSEC - "Biogenic CO2 capture into Sustainable Energy Carriers", this new research initiative is centered on environmental sustainability, aiming to contribute to the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions and the mitigation of climate change. The Project is based on capture and conversion of CO2 during algae cultivation for the subsequent production of energy-rich biomass (circular bioenergy system). CeNTI, in particular, will be involved in the evaluation and utilisation of the biomass for the production of Hydrogen, a renewable and environmentally friendly energy source. COSEC's kick-off meeting was recently held at the University of the Algarve (Portugal) and gathered the consortium’s entities. We're excited to share a groundbreaking development in renewable fuels! Researchers from RWTH Aachen University, the Max Planck Institute for Chemical Energy Conversion, and ETH Zürich, including Walter Leitner and André Bardow, have developed HyFiT, a new synthetic fuel. 🚀🔋 HyFiT fuels can be used directly in today's engines, significantly reducing particulate matter and nitrogen oxides emissions. Produced from renewable resources like green electricity, water, biomass, and CO₂, these fuels close the carbon cycle and utilize existing industrial infrastructure. Our study shows HyFiT fuels have a superior environmental profile, outperforming even battery-based technologies, especially over long distances. This innovation marks a significant step toward sustainable, carbon-neutral transportation. 🌍 Tackling CO₂ emissions from energy-intensive industries (EIIs) is crucial for our sustainable future. Our latest manuscript explores the potential of renewable energy (RE) technologies and biological CO₂ conversion to synthetic fuels. 🔬 Biological routes, such as algae capturing CO₂ to produce biomethane and Clostridia converting industrial CO₂ emissions into biofuels, show great promise. However, optimizing photobioreactor designs, maximizing yields, and ensuring efficient electron supply are key challenges. 💡 Collaboration between scientists, engineers, and policymakers is essential to overcome these hurdles and make CO₂ fixation economically viable. This review highlights microbial technologies for CO₂ conversion within European EIIs, under the EU Emissions Trading System, with global implications. Biorecro has extensive experience in integrating these operations into existing industrial facilities, preserving ecosystem integrity with zero impact on land use. 🔎 By capturing and storing #biogeniccarbon already being emitted, BECCS proves to be a powerful tool in the fight against climate change. Invest In Norway had the pleasure of joining the #GermanBiocharForum 2024 in Berlin to learn about visions, policies, and methodologies for integrating BCR into national and corporate strategies. The EU, USA, and China have already established a Biochar industry, which will contribute substantially to carbon dioxide removal (CDR). Norway, with its large reserves of biomass feedstock, could play a significant role and contribute to Biochar carbon removal (BCR).   While it is imperative to phase out fossil fuels and drastically reduce emissions as fast as possible, the only way to reach our climate goals is through additional carbon dioxide removal (CDR) from the atmosphere. Biochar carbon removal (BCR) is a CDR technology that offers several distinguished advantages: it is readily available and technologically mature (TRL 8-9), it comes with an established and reliable measuring, reporting, and verification (MRV) system, and biochar is a valuable product with a multitude of material applications.
