🌲 Only 12% of ancient temperate rainforests here in Wales are legally protected. This leads to mis-managed sites and the irreversible loss of others. Invasive species such as Rhododendron threaten the health of many sites, whilst dependencies on declining populations such as Ash only contribute to a bleak future. These woodlands are irreplaceable wildlife havens. They support a unique range of biodiversity, particularly diverse in plants and insects. They also showcase the past, allowing us to enhance our scientific knowledge and understanding in conservation areas such as rewilding, habitat restoration, and changes to community dynamics over time. It's encouraging to learn that Welsh conservation bodies have banded together, forming the Alliance for Wales' Rainforests (#AWR), to combat the threats these unique habitats face. This cooperation will hopefully enhance conservation success, brightening the future for these natural historical relics. Predator Free Hauraki Coromandel Community Trust set up the Fund for Nature Hauraki-Coromandel that is in our care, here's one of the many reasons they did so, and indeed why they exist... Wetlands are a precious part of our ecosystem, acting like the kidneys of the earth, cleaning the water that flows into them. They trap sediment and soils, filter out contaminants; can reduce flooding and protect coastal land from storm surge; and return nitrogen to the atmosphere. In New Zealand they support the greatest concentration of wildlife out of any other habitat and yet 90% of our wetlands have been cleared. Many of the community conservation groups in the Hauraki Coromandel are working to protect remaining wetlands and the endangered species that inhabit them, such as the Matuku-Hūrepo or Australasian Bittern, pictured below. Prepare to be enchanted by the heartwarming tale of the mountain pygmy-possum (Burramys parvus) and its unlikely ally, the bogong moth 🏔️ In a beautifully told short film by BBC Earth, we delve deep into the extraordinary bond shared by these fascinating creatures by following the Saving our Species mountain pygmy-possum conservation project. This project is delivered in partnership with NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service who are also protecting this species’ habitat as an Asset of Intergenerational Significance. https://ow.ly/Znhi50ReHO2

To mark the end of 2024 we've put together this short film showing some of the year's highlights. Conservation Partners works with people who own land to protect wildlife and habitats. We respect and value other land uses, and strive to find the common ground that unites shared interest in properly looking after country. 2025 will be a pivotal year for Conservation Partners with the launch of some innovative partnerships that will allow us to do more work in more places. We'll continue to recover populations of threatened species, improve habitat condition and strengthen the voice for pragmatic and practical conservation across Australia. Our success over the last 5 years is evidence that we mean business. This is a nice initiative. At times when trust in government is somewhat low, #rewilders will be encouraged to learn that the Scottish Government is already creating policy to enable ecosystem recovery to scale in #Scotland. When we "call on the government to declare a rewilding nation" it is important to recognize that we're referring to a large, complex system comprising two main parts: the politicians and the bureaucracy (or government agencies). The latter consist of technical professionals charged with implementing laws and, crucially, developing policy frameworks that enable politicians to respond to developments and trends within the broader technical and policy system . The significant shift from a defensive stance on biodiversity protection to a proactive agenda of ecosystem recovery was formalized in the 2022 Kunming Global Biodiversity Framework. Politicians are aware of this and Scottish ministers regularly talk about Scotland’s aspiration to become a 'net zero, nature positive, well-being economy ' in their speeches. This is not so different from the #rewilding nation vision. For example, the Scottish Biodiversity Strategy to 2045 adopts the ecosystem approach and emphasizes nature recovery. Work is underway on a Natural Capital Markets Framework to unlock private investment in nature recovery and, linked to this CreditNature (staffed by rewilders) has been procured under the CivTech Scotland to develop a ecosystem recovery credit and platform as an 'option' for Scotland. My point is that Scotland is already on the path to becoming a rewilding nation. The question is, how can we collaborate with progressive policymakers to co-develop policies that will steer 'the system' towards a regenerative and resilient future? The process involves trade-offs and compromises, but the new networks and flow of expertise also foster innovative ideas and approaches The technical behind-the-scenes world of policy-making does not lend itself to films, podcasts, and social media posts, but it's important for citizens to be aware that it exists. (As an aside, I'm finding that this topic does lends itself to interactive festival events!). One principle of rewilding is to simply begin, but begin with and learn from others who share a similar vision. What I truly value and appreciate about working in Scotland is the technical quality of Scottish policy makers and their openness to work with and learn with progressive professionals across diverse sectors An alliance of organisations formulating a charter is fine, but charters can become political and structural. My thinking is moving more towards 'compacts', namely agreements focusing on shared objective which others can join. This approach offers a more dynamic, flexible and collaborative approach which, for me, is more in line with the 'self-willed ecosystem' ethos of rewilding. #bigpicture #generationrestoration #changemakers #Hopeinaction Scottish Nature Finance Pioneers Trees for Life

From stopping oil and gas leases that would destroy precious cultural sites at Chaco Culture National Historical Park, to saving the watershed and bears from the Pebble Mine at Lake Clark and Katmai National Parks, to preserving marine life at Biscayne National Park, we at the National Parks Conservation Association are always at the front lines of national park protection. Our dedication doesn’t stop at national park borders because we know that what happens immediately outside of park boundaries, also affects the wildlife, nature and cultural artifacts inside parks. Help us conserve connected landscapes that Protect America’s Legacy and allow national parks to thrive for the next 100 years: https://bit.ly/3AQzC7o
