After years of working in political communications at both the provincial and federal levels, I’ve come to realize that a true passion lies in municipal politics. While my first love was federal politics—largely because I’m a big-picture thinker who likes to look at issues from a holistic, overarching perspective—I’ve discovered that when it comes to getting things done in a practical, hands-on way, municipal politics is where real impact happens. Unlike federal decisions, which can take time to trickle down and be felt in our day-to-day lives, municipal politics touches people directly in their communities. It’s the decisions made at this level that determine the quality of local services, infrastructure, and public spaces—the very things we interact with every day. Whether it’s improving a park, addressing economic development needs, or fixing a local road, municipal politics offers tangible, immediate results that make a difference. It’s exciting to be part of something that affects real change in people’s daily lives. There’s nothing more rewarding than seeing the impact of a decision take shape right in the heart of a community. New York is a big reason Democrats lost the House in 2022. And it’s going to be a big reason we win it back in 2024.   At the Democracy Alliance, Battleground New York is just one example of our belief that we have to throw out the old thinking about red and blue states. Winning for the long-term means staying laser focused on year-round investment in infrastructure in blue states. And it means going on offense in (so-called) red states, where some of our most effective organizers are poised to change the game.    The key to it all is building power. We’re supporting the most brilliant labor and community coalition with deep ties to our communities–who know voters best. Winning in November is essential—and not enough.
