Today we celebrate Manufacturing Day. This day showcases the latest innovations and technologies in manufacturing and inspires the next generation of professionals to shape the industry's future. Our fellow Milad Bemani from Eurecat - Centro Tecnológico, Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya (UPC) and RMIT University is pioneering research into the rapid fatigue evaluation of additive manufacturing specimens and components. His research project aims to evaluate the fatigue limit, mechanism, and strength of different additive manufacturing materials such as stainless and maraging steels, aluminium and titanium by using the rapid fatigue evaluation method, known as the stiffness method, Milad's project offers a faster, cheaper and easier way to understand the fatigue mechanism and fracture toughness of AM products. 🏆🔬 Great news! 🔬🏆 We are very happy to announce that our alumni Dr.-Ing. Niklas Lorenz has been awarded the SAMPE Innovation Prize for his outstanding dissertation entitled "Experimental and numerical analysis of the surface waviness of continuous fibre-reinforced thermoset fibre composites". 🎓 His research, carried out as part of an IKV research project, deals with the challenges posed by process-related surface waviness in lightweight structures made of fibre-reinforced plastics. His work introduces an innovative method for predicting these effects, which is specifically tailored to the processing of glass fibre-reinforced plastics using Compression Resin Transfer Moulding (C-RTM). By combining experimental analyses with numerical simulations, Niklas Lorenz investigated the influence of various factors such as resin systems, curing cycles and material structures. The overarching goal is to develop optimisation strategies to improve surface quality and reduce the amount of post-processing required.💡 The award ceremony took place on 9/10 April at the 28th National SAMPE Symposium at the Karlsruher Institut für Technologie (KIT). Congratulations to Niklas and also to all the other award winners for their remarkable contributions in the field of materials science and engineering for composites! #Research #Materials #Science #Innovation #SAMPEGermany #FRP #Lightweight #Construction #Fibre #Composites #DFG #PlasticsTechnology #Plastics

Research stay in Japan 🇯🇵 Scientific progress thrives on exchange with institutes all over the world - Michael Haas is currently visiting the Joining and Welding Research Institute (JWRI) at the Osaka University in Japan to promote this fact. Joint experiments at the unique X-ray facility in Osaka are planned to investigate three-dimensional capillary geometries during laser welding with simultaneous implementation of sophisticated process monitoring methods. 🤯 The joint research intensifies the cooperation between the IFSW and the #JWRI in both laser welding and X-ray evaluation. We are looking forward to the results of the great cooperation. The stay is supported by the Short-term Grants for Talents by InnovationsCampus Mobilität der Zukunft and the #Gsame scholarship, both funded by the Ministerium für Wissenschaft, Forschung und Kunst Baden-Württemberg. We would like thank Precitec - Laser Material Processing for providing the monitoring equipment. 🎉 Research Paper Alert 🎉 𝗔 𝗴𝗿𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗱𝗯𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗻𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗹 𝗹𝗮𝘀𝗲𝗿-𝗯𝗮𝘀𝗲𝗱 𝗵𝗲𝗮𝘁 𝘁𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘁𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗺𝗲𝘁𝗵𝗼𝗱 𝗵𝗮𝘀 𝗯𝗲𝗲𝗻 𝗱𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗹𝗼𝗽𝗲𝗱 𝘁𝗼 𝘀𝗶𝗴𝗻𝗶𝗳𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗻𝘁𝗹𝘆 𝗲𝗻𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝗿𝗲𝗹𝗶𝗲𝗳 𝗼𝗳 𝗮𝗱𝗱𝗶𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗹𝘆 𝗺𝗮𝗻𝘂𝗳𝗮𝗰𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲𝗱 𝗺𝗲𝘁𝗮𝗹 𝗽𝗮𝗿𝘁𝘀! Big congratulations to Robin W., Markus Hofele, Johannes Neuer and Harald Riegel from our institute and Patrick Hegele from the Technische Universität München for this amazing achievement! 🌟 📢 The team has developed a closed-loop controlled laser-based heat treatment with temperature feedback for metal parts produced by the laser powder bed fusion of metals process (PBF-LB/M). Using a TRUMPF scan head the laser was guided in a meandering scanning pattern over the surface of the parts. In a closed control loop, the temperature was continuously monitored by a Sensortherm GmbH pyrometer and maintained at a predefined target value by dynamically regulating the laser power. This innovative method reduces residual stresses 𝙞𝙣 𝙨𝙚𝙘𝙤𝙣𝙙𝙨 and therefore displacement after the part break-up. It is remarkable that the process can almost 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗲𝘁𝗲𝗹𝘆 relieve residual stresses in components with a material thickness up to 3 mm and that the displacement after cutting of the support structures is even 𝗯𝗲𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗿 than after conventional furnace heat treatment. But that's not all – this laser-based approach uses up to 15 times 𝗹𝗲𝘀𝘀 energy than a comparable furnace heat treatment, making a major contribution to resource efficiency in manufacturing. ⚡ ♻️ 🌱 Check out the 𝗼𝗽𝗲𝗻 𝗮𝗰𝗰𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝗽𝗮𝗽𝗲𝗿 entitled “Laser-Based Closed-Loop Controlled Heat Treatment for Residual Stress Relief of Additively Manufactured AlSi10Mg Components” published in Wiley'𝘀 𝗔𝗱𝘃𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲𝗱 𝗘𝗻𝗴𝗶𝗻𝗲𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗠𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗮𝗹𝘀 for more details: https://lnkd.in/eShBA9jA We thank the Bundesministerium für Bildung und Forschung for funding of this work as part of the program "FH-Impuls" (Project SmartPro, Subproject AddFunk)! 🎓 #LaserHeatTreatment #StressRelief #AdditiveManufacturing #LPBF #Innovation #technology #sustainability #ResourceEfficiency #ManufacturingExcellence Hochschule Aalen - Technik und Wirtschaft SmartPro Kooperationsnetzwerk
