HEMORRHAGIC ENCEPHALOPATHIES AND MYELOPATHIES Great review article published in Frontiers in Veterinary Science by Koen Santifort from IVC/Evidensia Small Animal Referral Arnhem, Netherland, and Prof Simon Platt from our Vet Oracle Teleradiology team. This article proposea an etiologic classification system for both intraparenchymal hemorrhagic encephalopathy and myelopathy following a review of the literature detailing the presentation, diagnosis, therapy, and prognosis of these diseases. NEW RESEARCH: A machine-learning algorithm to grade heart murmurs and stage preclinical myxomatous mitral valve disease in dogs A study led by the University of Cambridge Veterinary School has shown that a machine-learning algorithm, adapted on data from murmurs in humans, can accurately detect and grade heart murmurs in dogs. Tested on 756 dogs, the algorithm achieved an 87.9% sensitivity and 81.7% specificity. It’s a promising tool for identifying preclinical myxomatous mitral valve disease (MMVD) in dogs, potentially enabling low-cost, accurate screening in primary veterinary care. ➡️ Read the full study: https://buff.ly/3AtJ2pb #JVIM

We were thrilled to be invited by Dirk Werling at the Royal Veterinary College to visit the world's first #organonachip facilities for veterinary species. This new Centre for Vaccinology and Regenerative Medicine also includes a platform for the culture of ex vivo tissue slices from multiple organs and animal species. These complex #invitro systems allow for drug and vaccine testing as well as basic research into how cells interact with each other and pathogens, without having to use live animal testing. We are excited about the potential of these emerging techniques to #Reduce the numbers of animals used in research and testing and ultimately #Replace animal use where possible. Some interesting Home Office statistics for 2022 in the UK: 🐑 33.8% of procedures for translational/applied research were for "animal disorders and diseases" 🐖 25.5% of procedures for regulatory purposes were for "medicinal products for veterinary use and their residues" #3Rs #veterinaryresearch #NAMs #NATs

I am pleased to announce that our paper on the "Evaluation of the analgesic effects of diclofenac as a premedication drug in dogs undergoing ovariohysterectomy" has been published in the journal of Topics in Companion Animal Medicine. In Veterinary Medicine, information regarding the use of diclofenac for perioperative analgesia is still lacking. Therefore, our aim was to evaluate the intraoperative antinociceptive effects of diclofenac and its potential influence on recovery of dogs undergoing ovariohysterectomy. Diclofenac given alone in premedication showed satisfactory intraoperative antinociceptive effect similar to morphine. Also, dogs administered diclofebac alone in premedication showed better quality of recovery compared to dogs receiving morphine. These results are promising and suggest a beneficial use of diclofenac in premedication as part of the multimodal anesthetic approach in dogs. #veterinarymedicine #balancedanesthesia #clinicalresearch
