Have you ever walked through a city and felt like it was telling you a story? Jaime Lerner, a visionary urban planner, once said, "The city is not a problem to be solved but a mystery to be embraced." This idea has always intrigued me. Cities are more than just buildings, roads, and infrastructure—they are living, breathing entities filled with history, culture, and countless untold stories. Too often, we approach urban development with a mindset of fixing or optimizing, but what if we took a step back and saw our cities as complex puzzles, each with its own unique rhythm and character? When we view a city through this lens, we begin to appreciate the layers of #Diversity and #Innovation that make it thrive. This perspective allows us to design urban spaces that aren’t just functional but also enriching, spaces where people feel connected to both their surroundings and each other. #UrbanPlanning becomes not just a technical endeavor but an opportunity to craft environments that inspire and nurture the human spirit. At SheherSaaz, we embrace this philosophy wholeheartedly. Our approach to #SustainableDevelopment is about more than just solving urban issues—it’s about understanding the #MysteryOfCities and designing spaces that reflect their unique identities. By integrating #GreenUrbanism and #EcoFriendly practices, we aim to create cities that are not only efficient but also vibrant and full of life. We believe that when we embrace the mystery of our cities, we can build places where people truly love to live. How do you view your city? As a problem to be solved or a mystery to be embraced? Let’s connect and discuss how we can work together to create urban spaces that are as dynamic and multifaceted as the people who inhabit them. #DecodingDensity Competition: Urban Village-Wood Living Proposal I'm excited to share with you my team video entry developed with Marco Palacios, #UrbanVillageWoodLiving, for the #DecodingDensity competition organized by Urbanarium. With over 87 participants #worldwide, the competition brief helps imagine new possibilities for a six-story plus apartment in #woodframe forms by addressing #climatechange and #housingaffordability. Submissions challenge the constraints of #buildingcode and other #planning regulations which relentless #housingsupply process in #Vancouver #Canada. #Housingshortages, #globalwarming, and #socialisolation are alarmingly rising in #cities, exposing major risks to livelihoods within the built environment. This is partly due to a harmful legacy of single zoning policy and a car-oriented mindset embedded in the planning system. We not only built too big, but we also encouraged sprawl. Our policy and urban desing have lost attention to the neighborhood-scale sense of community and walkability. Our project vision addresses these issues by combining #peoplecentric spaces, #housingtypes and #tenuremix, and #communal living culture at the core of designing homes and communities. We do this through our “Urban village-wood living” model which transforms existing #lowrise neighborhood zones, known as the #yellowbelt, into #active #transitoriented, #midrise, and #woodframe neighborhoods. Our proposal advocates for #peoplecentric planning and #formbased codes to enable #thrivingcommunities in the long-term but we need a #flexible and #scalable policy. Thus, our entry proposes an 8-step #urbandesigntoolkit for a #fasttrackpermit approval process to #unlock mid-rise development opportunities in areas with lot consolidation close to public transit. We #congratulate all participants of the #DecodingDensity competition for their innovative ideas and dedication to addressing the challenges of today. We are happy to see the winning proposals and how they will shape the future of affordable #missingdensity made in #wood. We are community enhancers – deeply invested in the unique charm and character of each locale we can work within. Our approach is not merely to construct buildings but to cultivate spaces that resonate with the community's spirit, complementing and elevating the existing aesthetic and social fabric. Our commitment to understanding and integrating local development codes, ordinances, and especially the nuanced requirements of historic districts, underscores our dedication to harmonious and respectful growth. With a team that brings a wealth of knowledge about city-specific regulations, and the support of counsel familiar with local legal landscapes, we ensure our projects are not just compliant. Still, we are embodiments of our collaborative and community-first ethos. Our work, exemplified by projects of our partner Garfield Pubic/Private like the Eccles Theater in downtown Salt Lake City, demonstrates our capability to blend cutting-edge design with historical reverence, creating landmarks that are both innovative and intimately connected to their surroundings. This project, a testament to our thoughtful approach, harmonizes modern development demands with the preservation of the community's historical legacy, facilitated by our meticulous compliance with development codes and our pursuit of LEED Gold certification standards. Through such endeavors, Properitize Ventures aims to inspire investors, community leaders, and city officials alike, showcasing our commitment to enriching communities by crafting spaces that are architecturally distinguished and deeply integrated into the local culture and ethos. Our vision is to foster environments that people are proud to call home, strengthening the community bond and contributing to the vibrancy and sustainability of the areas we touch. #MixedUseDevelopment #UrbanDevelopment #DevelopmentFinance #CityLeadership #UrbanPlanning #CouncilMembers #ProgressiveThinking #Sustainability #Walkability #CharmAndCharacter #LEEDDesign #SustainableDevelopment #SmartCities #UrbanDesign #UrbanRenewal #GreenBuilding #TransitOrientedDevelopment #NewUrbanism #PlaceMaking #UrbanRegeneration #PublicSpaces #MXU #CommunityEngagement #EnvironmentalDesign #EconomicDevelopment #CityPlanning #InfrastructureDevelopment #RegenerativeDesign #GreenInfrastructure #SustainableCities #EcoFriendlyLiving #HealthyCommunities #RenewableEnergy #ResilientCities #SmartGrowth #CreativePlacemaking #GreenSpaces #GreenRoofs #MixedUseDistricts #PedestrianFriendly #CivicEngagement #EquitableDevelopment #SustainableLiving #GreenTransportation #CarbonNeutral #ClimateResilience #EnergyEfficiency #UrbanResilience #LowCarbonCities #CommunityDevelopment #SmartMobility #BikeFriendlyCities #HistoricPreservation #LocalEconomy #PublicTransportation #NYC #NewYork #NewJersey #JerseyCity #Waco #Texas #TX #Austin #Dallas #Houston #LasVegas #Atlanta #Nashville #Temecula #LosAngeles

– Verticality – Houston is big—promising always more acreage, more sprawl. Less remarked upon is the city's height. The fourth largest city in the nation, Houston is also its fourth tallest, boasting 430 high rises. By way of the downtown tunnel system, a Houstonian can traverse 20 blocks and 30 stories, without ever leaving an air-conditioned environment. As the nation’s metroplexes reassess their approach to sustainable density, perhaps none is better suited than Space City to answer the question: what to do with all that space in-between? Our Design Director, Mide Akinsade, recently sat down with Rice's Kinder Institute for Urban Research to discuss his founding of a Texas chapter of the Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat (CTBUH), and his vision of a denser, more walkable, more vertical Houston. https://lnkd.in/gM4DAwsS Perkins&Will #architecture #urbandesign #urbanplanning #walkability #sustainabledesign

What is Tactical Urbanism, and Why Does Your City, Town, or Organization Need It? Tactical Urbanism isn’t just a buzzword—it’s a game-changer for cities, towns and organizations striving to create safer, more vibrant, and connected communities. At its core, Tactical Urbanism involves small-scale, low-cost, and temporary changes to public spaces to improve them for people. Whether it’s adding pop-up bike lanes, transforming parking spaces into mini-parks, or creating temporary pedestrian plazas, these quick actions have a powerful impact. Here’s why it’s important for your city, town, and organization: ✅ Fast Solutions to Big Problems: Instead of waiting years for large infrastructure projects, Tactical Urbanism allows communities to test ideas and make quick improvements that can be scaled up later. ✅ Community Engagement: Tactical Urbanism invites the public to play an active role in shaping their environment, fostering a sense of ownership and pride. ✅ Improved Safety and Accessibility: Simple changes like better lighting, crosswalk art, or traffic-calming measures can make neighborhoods safer and more enjoyable for everyone. ✅ Economic Growth: By activating underused spaces, cities attract more foot traffic, benefiting local businesses and creating thriving public areas. The best part? Tactical Urbanism is collaborative. It bridges the gap between planners, designers, and the community, showing what’s possible when creativity meets action. What small, impactful changes could make a difference in your city or town? Let’s start the conversation about making our communities more vibrant and people-focused! #TacticalUrbanism #UrbanDesign #CommunityEngagement #SafeCities #VibrantCommunities #safety #training #SSRF

Met a Gamechanger in Urban Planning, Jan Gehl. At Building Green Deutschland 2024 in Hamburg, I had the honor of meeting Jan Gehl, a pioneer in urban planning whose impact on making cities worldwide more livable is profoundly felt—from Copenhagen and Melbourne to San Francisco, São Paulo, and New York. In 2014, the German magazine brand eins aptly described him as '...the man behind the boom of his hometown Copenhagen, the transformation of Moscow, and the revival of Manhattan. Once ridiculed, he is now recognized as one of the world’s most influential urban planners. Gehl poses a simple yet profound question: "How do we actually want to live?"...' Jan Gehl at Building Green Deutschland: "...We form the cities - then the cities form us We form the buildings - then they form us We form the details - then the details form us... …WANTED >>Lively cities are loved cities (livable city) >>Sustainable city - the more we walk, cycle, and use public transport, the better >>Healthy city - 'the sitting syndrome' makes it essential that we move more and SIT less >>A good city to be old in Looking carefully after people in city planning will efficiently address all four issues. ...The human Dimension - give people room to walk and to meet. People in the city is No.1 attraction. ...Lesson from Copenhagen: >>you get what you invite for. >>If you make more roads, you will have more traffic. >>Making a better city for people, you will have more walking, more public life, and more cycling. ...In Conclusion People Cities as first Priority." Jan Gehl has changed the game. Now, it's up to us to continue his approach, integrate the parameter of BIODIVERSITY, and rethink our cities in terms of urban biodiversity to make them places for „THE NEW EVERYONE" – people, animals, plants, and even microorganisms. In this spirit, let's biodiversify! youturn_biodiversity - Cities for „THE NEW EVERYONE“ #youturn_turnyourcity #youturn_biodiversity
