A new initiative known as the Bioplastics Innovation Hub has been launched by CSIRO and Murdoch University. CSIRO is Australia’s national science agency and the aim of the project is to develop bioplastics which are 100% compostable. The ability to create this hub, was brought about through an investment of AUS eight million and this investment will also make it possible to bring together industry and academia, with the intention of producing bioplastics. At our #MUGI2024 User's Conference in Geneva next month, Yasmine NAFAI and Miren Carro of Axens will be presenting on Intelligent Recycling: how to integrate #plasticrecycling in a #refiningplant Intelligent recycling refers to the use of advanced technologies and innovative processes to efficiently convert waste into valuable resources. In this paper, we present the integration of plastics recycling into refining processes, which can be a multifaceted undertaking, requiring technological innovation and process optimization. Recycling plastics in refining processes involves several steps and considerations to ensure efficient and environmentally sustainable processes. Evaluating the economic feasibility of integrating plastics recycling into refinery processes is an important part of any refinery integration study. Factors such as the cost of recycling technologies, market demand for recycled products and potential revenue streams from the sale of recycled materials or production cost offsets need to be taken into account to study the economic profitability of the integration project in function of the recycling technologies chosen. National and international companies can access these laboratories and benefit from the combined expertise and industrial scale of the facilities. The unique ecosystem supports them in obtaining new raw materials – be it plastics, metals, minerals, batteries or bio-based materials – in practical trials with a strong focus on recycling technologies.
