Happy Halloween! Here's a scary statistic for you: only 17% of cybersecurity professionals in the UK are women. Cybersecurity may be the fastest-growing IT role, but gender diversity has dropped since 2021. Despite a 128% increase in roles, the gender gap is still a major challenge. Attracting more women into cybersecurity is key to closing this gap. More initiatives like the NCSC’s Cyber First Girls competition could help inspire future talent. On world book day my usual stack of fiction has Crimedotcom on the top of the ever growing pile, as I am currently studying Cybersecurity with the support of my employer Three Ireland via UCD. As I always say to my two little bookworms you can never be bored when you have a book in your hand and they went off to school this morning with Harry Potter and Diary of a wimpy kid for a day of fun and reading. How lucky are they! As I upskill and delve deeper as part of my studies in Cybersecurity this field is certainly widening my eyes to the level of ever increasing threat to business. With International women's day tomorrow the irony of studying cybersecurity in a heavily male dominated field isn't lost on me with business struggling to fill positions with women currently working in only 24% of the roles. Diversity is Security is the message from Cyber Women in Ireland and with mentorship, employer support for women in business this gender gap will hopefully close year on year. #worldbookday #cybersecurity #iwd2024

According to a recent report by (ISC)² on Women in Cybersecurity, our presence in the industry is growing, but we're still a minority – estimated at around 20-25%. The good news? The trend is shifting – more young women are entering cybersecurity than ever before! 🎉 This is your chance to be a part of something groundbreaking. The report also found that women are more likely to be drawn to cybersecurity because they want to make a positive impact. If that sounds like you, and you're looking for a challenging and rewarding career, then cybersecurity might be the perfect fit! The report also highlights that women tend to have gotten into cybersecurity through encouragement from teachers, family or mentors. No matter the industry this rings true. Mentorship, the ability to see that you can through encouragement and support of someone else, remains an important factor. I am so happy for ACCESS Consulting Solutions to be in partnership with ISC2 and their future employability initiatives. The developed courses around personal branding, networking, and cyber pathways just to name a few all ring a theme of getting connected and finding mentors for success. Who are you mentoring today??? "It is possible to boost diversity and cyber security capabilities as a whole, if organisations are open to adjusting their processes. Part of this is about making the business attractive to diverse candidates in the first place. Those already working in cybersecurity say mentors and role models are key."

According to the just-released “POV Reimagined: Women in Cybersecurity” research report from The FQ and Deloitte, cybersecurity is one of the most relevant global industries for women because it offers job security, opportunities for skill development, and a sense of purpose. So why are women still underrepresented in the industry? Our research shows that 70% of working women believe that to be in cybersecurity they must have proficient technical skills, yet many people succeed without computer hardware or software expertise. With the soaring demand for talent, it’s time to turn this around. Join us in the #EqualityLounge at #AWNewYork24 as we share the revealing data on what’s holding women back, and the actionable insights of how to close the gender gap in cybersecurity. • Shelley Zalis, CEO, The Female Quotient • Emily Mossburg, Principal, Global Cyber Leader, Deloitte
