On world book day my usual stack of fiction has Crimedotcom on the top of the ever growing pile, as I am currently studying Cybersecurity with the support of my employer Three Ireland via UCD. As I always say to my two little bookworms you can never be bored when you have a book in your hand and they went off to school this morning with Harry Potter and Diary of a wimpy kid for a day of fun and reading. How lucky are they! As I upskill and delve deeper as part of my studies in Cybersecurity this field is certainly widening my eyes to the level of ever increasing threat to business. With International women's day tomorrow the irony of studying cybersecurity in a heavily male dominated field isn't lost on me with business struggling to fill positions with women currently working in only 24% of the roles. Diversity is Security is the message from Cyber Women in Ireland and with mentorship, employer support for women in business this gender gap will hopefully close year on year. #worldbookday #cybersecurity #iwd2024

Happy Halloween! Here's a scary statistic for you: only 17% of cybersecurity professionals in the UK are women. Cybersecurity may be the fastest-growing IT role, but gender diversity has dropped since 2021. Despite a 128% increase in roles, the gender gap is still a major challenge. Attracting more women into cybersecurity is key to closing this gap. More initiatives like the NCSC’s Cyber First Girls competition could help inspire future talent. No matter the industry this rings true. Mentorship, the ability to see that you can through encouragement and support of someone else, remains an important factor. I am so happy for ACCESS Consulting Solutions to be in partnership with ISC2 and their future employability initiatives. The developed courses around personal branding, networking, and cyber pathways just to name a few all ring a theme of getting connected and finding mentors for success. Who are you mentoring today??? "It is possible to boost diversity and cyber security capabilities as a whole, if organisations are open to adjusting their processes. Part of this is about making the business attractive to diverse candidates in the first place. Those already working in cybersecurity say mentors and role models are key."

Cybersecurity is becoming a crowded place, yet faces a shortage of #skills globally. To address this shortage, concerted focus on including #women in this field offers a tangible solution. Thankfully, there are initiatives that bring diversity, inclusion and #equity to this field. A bright example is the #HerCyberTracks initiative by ITU - a global leader in cybersecurity governance. This five-months-long program brings together women from diverse backgrounds through a solid learning and connecting journey. This is much more than a “tokenistic inclusion” initiative. This is core to #cybersecurity governance, capacity, and effectiveness. I had the honor of mentoring and learning from Rina Halimi and Anita Ljuljdjurovic as part of #HerCyberTracks who are establishing themselves as cyber experts in their home region. Keep up the excellent work Yasmine Idrissi Azzouzi from the #ITU and Alissa Frenkel from the #GIZ and the broader expert team! I did not have the same economic power at the beginning of my cybersecurity than I do now with 10+ years of experience. I could not afford: - $2,000+ cybersecurity conferences - $8,000+ cybersecurity trainings - Multiple industry memberships and paid events Which means I did not have access to the conversations that take place in those settings. Nor did I have access to the kind of informal mentoring and job opportunities that get traded. To ensure equitable financial access, we're using a sliding-scale for the Hacker in Heels Salon. A sliding scale makes access to a resource relative to the circumstances that an individual finds themselves in. Women with 0-4 years of experience in cybersecurity will pay less than women with 5-9 years of experience, who will pay less than women with 10+ years of experience. This accounts for the differences in financial earnings expected as a woman's cybersecurity careers progresses. ALL women who attend will get outsized value from the event in everything from the quality of the food, the beauty of the space, and the caliber of conversation and connection. It's just another way that Hacker in Heels is creating inclusive events and community for women in cybersecurity. #womenincybersecurity #cybersecurity #wicys
