Just 4kwp of solar capacity continues to revolutionize lives for over 5,000 people at Mchisa Farming Scheme in Mangochi, Malawi! ☀ Last week, our visit revealed farmers already harvesting and preparing for a second cultivation cycle after the rainy season, utilizing solar-powered irrigation to maximize productivity in this dry season. Maize, tomatoes, onions, and more flourish here, demonstrating the value of solar power in enabling sustainable agriculture that improves food security. 🌱 Check out our drone shots in the swipe-up to see the vibrant transformation of Mchisa's fields! #sopowerful #solarwhereitmattersmost #malawi #solarpower #foodsecurity #sgd2 #sdgs #farming #ruralelectrification

🌍 In Sub-Saharan Africa, agriculture contributes around 20% of the region’s GDP. Despite abundant arable land and groundwater resources, poor irrigation infrastructure and unpredictable weather hinder crop growth, exacerbating food insecurity. Diesel pumps, while an alternative, come with high costs and environmental drawbacks. Supporting the mission to empower farmers through sustainable and cost-effective solutions, the Energy Entrepreneurs Growth Fund (EEGF) has partnered with SunCulture since 2022. SunCulture’s solar-powered water pumping and irrigation systems empower smallholder farmers, allowing them to increase yields, grow higher-value crops, and improve their socioeconomic well-being. The company offers a Pay-As-You-Grow scheme that allows smallholder farmers to pay in small monthly installments. 🌱 Take Josephine, a 52-year-old farmer in Sagana, Kenya. Since adopting SunCulture’s solution, she’s saved time, grown more crops, and felt confident about her coffee yields. Solar-powered irrigation is transforming lives, one farm at a time. Climate extremes will be on the rise for the foreseeable future, but good to know there are some options to limit their impact on food in Africa
#Didyouknow: 🌽 Sub-Saharan Africa has the highest maize yield gaps globally, despite its importance as a staple crop in the region, and is also subject to significant climate risk. A recently published CGIAR #ClimateResilienceInitiative (#ClimBeR) article out now on IOP Publishing discusses how agro-technologies such as #irrigation and new crop varieties can reduce climate risk for agricultural production in sub-Saharan Africa. 👉🏻 https://lnkd.in/dpQhxTB5 Andrew Challinor University of Leeds Stewart Jennings Laura Arenas

Empower people, achieve progress. The Machobane Farming System teaches us that the key to overcoming food insecurity hinges not just on external resources, but on utilising available natural resources to foster innovation and self-reliance among farmers. Education and motivation can transform passive waiting into proactive farming, ensuring that no one misses opportunities like the crucial sowing season waiting for external aid. Let's invest in human potential to cultivate sustainable futures. #SustainableAgriculture #FoodSecurity #EconomicResilience #Lesotho #MachobaneFarming #LesothoAgriculture #Farming

With the current unpredictable weather patterns prevailing in the majority of the regions in Uganda, farmers are subject to limited water resources for crop production. As a result, there are enormous loses in yeild, profits and food in this long dry spell. At such times, it is prudent that methods of provision of water to crops are provided. Below is one of our farmers in Kitgum who through the infrastructural grant support scheme managed to acquire a solar powered irrigation pump that has enabled the farmer group carry out vegetable farming even in this dry spell. This has been coupled with GAPs like mulching, ridging, and pruning for purposes of soil and water conservation. #climatechange #waterconservation Nsubuga Benard , patrick ogweng TechnoServe

As we ponder the future of climate-resilient agriculture, we find inspiration in Peru's innovative irrigation projects. The World Bank's initiative, P179037, has been instrumental in promoting water management practices that bolster farmers' ability to adapt to the changing climate. I recently came across a procurement plan outlined by Mara Teresa Sanchez Lechuga, which highlights the importance of investing in irrigation systems that support small-scale farmers. This not only ensures food security but also empowers local communities to become more resilient. How can we, as agvocates, support the implementation of such projects in other regions? #abutispinach #Agvocate #AgroDiplomacy 🌾💡🌎

🎥 Supporting Small-Scale Farmers in Manicaland through Global Shapers Mutare Hub I had the opportunity to visit one of our local farms, and it’s clear that these hardworking farmers are the backbone of our communities. To truly maximize their potential, however, they need our support! 🚜 Challenges they face include: • Sustainable irrigation systems to combat water shortages • Knowledge and resources for effective pest management • Reliable access to broader markets • Upscaled access to quality inputs and resources • Partnerships to increase production capacity • Handy equipment to make farming more efficient 🤝 Let’s come together to address these challenges and empower small-scale farmers to achieve greater productivity and sustainability. Together, we can build a thriving agricultural sector that benefits all. #SupportLocalFarmers #Agriculture #CommunityEmpowerment #SmallScaleFarming #Manicaland #SustainableFarming #Partnerships #AgriShapers #ZMX Zimbabwe Mercantile Exchange Raissa K. Once upon a time in the rugged terrains of Lesotho, Dr. J.J. Machobane developed a revolutionary approach to farming that would later become known as the Machobane Farming System (MFS). Driven by a vision to empower local farmers and enhance food security, Dr. J.J. Machobane emphasised the critical importance of timing in agriculture—a lesson that remains just as relevant today. 🌱📅 Inspired by this legacy, we've created a detailed graphic that maps out the full spectrum for planting and harvesting crops in a year, tailored to our unique environmental conditions. These periods aren’t just dates on a calendar; they are a synthesis of years of observation and success under the MFS, proven to maximise yields and sustain farms through the seasons. This isn’t just farming—this is a continuation of a story of resilience, innovation, and community empowerment. #SustainableAgriculture #MachobaneFarmingSystem #AgriculturalInnovation #FoodSecurity #ClimateSmartAgriculture #AgriTech #EcoFriendlyFarming #CommunityEmpowerment #Farming #Lesotho #Agriculture
