We are delighted to share the news that Leroy Ignacio and the SRCS have won a prestigious Whitley Award from the Whitley Fund for Nature! The award was presented to Leroy by Her Royal Highness, the Princess Anne at a special ceremony at the Royal Geographic Society building in London. This is an incredible honour and we are grateful to the WFN for the recognition of our work. We strongly believe that more support is needed for Indigenous-led, grassroots conservation and we hope to now use this platform to continue spreading this important message.

Our Chief Executive, Jo Pike, has written to Joe Fitzpatrick MSP and Lorna Slater MSP requesting that the application for a golf course at Coul Links is called in by The Scottish Government after being approved The Highland Council. "Government high-level ambition on the nature and climate crisis is clear. The draft Scottish Biodiversity Strategy puts in place the entirely necessary, ambitious targets of halting biodiversity loss by 2030 and restoring and regenerating biodiversity by 2045. Additionally, the National Planning Framework 4, Policy 3 claims to “rebalance the planning system in favour of conserving, restoring and enhancing biodiversity and promotes investment in nature-based solutions, benefiting people and nature.” It is the Scottish Wildlife Trust’s view that these statements would mean very little without effective actions to back them up. In the case of Coul Links, this means calling in the application." It's little short of scandalous that this proposal should have re-surfaced so soon after the lengthy and expensive public inquiry which came out against a similar application. The waste of public funds, and those of many charities, is obvious. The gap between rhetoric and reality in national talk about halting biodiversity loss will also be clear if this isn't reined-in by the Scottish Government.

Global support from #PatronsOfNature for the #IconicSpecies campaign🌍 I am honoured and proud of the support that the #IconicsSpecies campaign has garnered from key global voices on #conservation. The IUCN Red of List of Threatened Species which is the most comprehensive source of information on the global #extinction #risk status of #animal, #fungi and #plant #species is celebrating its 60th anniversary. As part of the celebrations, we launched the #IconicSpecies campaign highlighting that these threatened species which inhabit our planet are just as iconic as the things we cherish. I thank #supporters and #globalleaders Jane Goodall (UN Messenger of Peace & founder of The Jane Goodall Institute), Dona Bertarelli (Executive Chair, Dona Bertarelli Philanthropy), Pierfrancesco Vago (Chair, the MSC Foundation’s executive committee, HSH Prince Albert II (Fondation Prince Albert II de Monaco), Richard Sneider (Special Advisor to the IUCN, FFSG global chair), Francisca Cortés Solari (Executive president Philanthropy Cortés Solari) and Eric Jing (Chairman and CEO of Ant Group) who have expressed their support for the campaign. I am certain that this will help us reach a wider #audience & larger impact by creating #awareness and driving action. 👏A big thank you to everyone who has supported us already. Every #action counts and has a lasting impact on the collective goal to protect the #species that share our planet with us. 🍀🌿 If you are passionate about the environment and conservation, join the movement to protect the #IconicSpecies and make a difference https://shorturl.at/pfIWu Want to learn more about the campaign? Published a new article in Environmental Humanities on extinction, homelessness, and conservation. Abstract below. This article asks what it means for conservation scientists to label a member of an endangered, endemic species homeless. By considering the boundary-crossing figure of Ho‘ailona, a partially blind Hawaiian monk seal who was declared homeless and translocated six times between 2008 and 2009, the article argues that the language of home points to the ongoing operations of colonialism in Western conservation. Reading the discourse of homelessness offers a methodology for tracing the histories and manifestations of colonial logics as they circulate in conservation science. At the same time, the article considers how Kānaka Maoli articulated a contrapuntal claim to home that positioned Ho‘ailona as belonging in his natal waters and among a multispecies community of caregivers. Bringing together critical homelessness studies and settler colonial studies, the essay examines how settler societies and institutions use endangered marine species to make specific claims to home and, by extension, erase Indigenous claims to place.

As highlighted in the Tanzanian Times, the official handover of Manyara Ranch Conservancy marked a significant milestone in our commitment to sustainable conservation and community empowerment. This transition not only underscores the importance of local stewardship but also aligns with our vision of #Africanled #conservation initiatives. Sea & Bush's investment of TZS 53 billion in the region signals a bright future for community-driven #economicdevelopment and #environmentalsustainability. It is a testament to the collaborative efforts required to protect our natural heritage while fostering economic growth. At the African Wildlife Foundation, we believe in the power of community engagement and the critical role that local leaders play in conservation. This handover is more than a transfer of land; it’s a transfer of trust and responsibility to those who live closest to the wildlife and landscapes we strive to protect. What happens when you bring young people and conservation organisations together for a 2-day event in Cambridge... an incredibly inspiring Youth in Nature Summit! Thanks to the youth committee that organised the summit with support from partner organisations RSPB, British Trust for Ornithology (BTO) and WWF-UK. I met so many young people passionate about nature and I am in awe of their passion and knowledge. I come away from this weekend feeling positive, inspired, and excited to continue working in youth empowerment. Many of the organisations at the summit this weekend are at the start of their youth engagement journey or keen to do more, and this is encouraging to see but how to do we get more CEOs and leaders on board and attending events like this? If every charity was required to have a youth engagement strategy and better still a youth board in the same way as a trustee board, young people would feel empowered, and charities would represent more diverse perspectives and be shaped by and for future generations. It's clear that there's a lot of work to do to improve access to nature and improve diversity in the conservation sector but there's good things to celebrate like free access to RSPB nature reserves for 16-24 year olds, Action for Conservation's free summer camps for 12-16 year olds and brilliant initiatives like The Conservation Equity Project. Plus lots of organisations are currently recruiting for their respective youth schemes - Butterfly Conservation, RSPB, Marine Conservation Society Youth Engagement is vital. Young people should be involved in decision making that affects their future and we need to make sure we protect and restore nature for future generations to enjoy. 🌱🦔✊ #YouthinNatureSummit #youthempowerment

Exciting news on the #bluecarbonecosystem front! Can you imagine that 99.5% of Seychelles #seagrass habitats are found within #marineprotectedareas? A new research study under the Seychelles #SeagrassMappingandCarbonAssessment Project mapped the distribution of seagrass meadows across Seychelles’ entire EEZ. This first-of-its-kind study has not only identified the location of seagrass but also quantified the amount of carbon being stored within these habitats. Quick facts from the new findings include: ✔ 1,599 km2 of seagrass habitats were mapped (equivalent to approx. 29000 football fields). ✔ Seagrass is storing 510 000 tCO2 per year, equivalent to annual emissions from Seychelles’ energy sector. ✔ Majority of seagrass is located around the Mahe Plateau Rim and the Amirantes group. ✔ With 7 species recorded, the most diverse habitats are found around Baie St Anne Praslin and the Au Cap region. Basically, the study offers reassuring news: seagrass is one of our best odds in the battle against #climatechange! 🌊🌿 Want to know more? What’s our Why? We aim to enable Business Growth and Positive Change. Often this takes the form of regenerating beautiful buildings and helping our network connect. And sometimes it’s supporting other people doing amazing things to positively contribute to our world. We love what the guys Heal Rewilding are doing. Often it the small things that help change broader behaviours that make such a difference. #positivechange #businessgrowth
The Curious Network is delighted to be sponsoring Heal Live: London a rewilding and nature event at Conway Hall on the evening of 23rd October. These events are for anyone who considers themselves a nature lover, rewilder, climate change and biodiversity campaigner or are just looking to be inspired to make a positive change for nature, for the environment and for themselves. Join Heal Rewilding for an engaging, warm and informative evening full of stories of hope and action with expert speakers including Elliot Newton, co-founder of Citizen Zoo and Jasmine Isa Qureshi, intersectional writer, activist and storyteller. Amongst other themes, they will be discussing access to nature - exploring local action to tackle disparity in access to rich and diverse green spaces and how we can ensure we all benefit whilst balancing wildlife's need for sanctuary. You will also hear from Heal Rewilding, on the highs and lows of establishing their first site in Somerset, where they will share the changes they have witnessed, demonstrating what rewilding can give back to wildlife and to people and their communities in a relatively short space of time. These events are also running in #Birmingham and #York so please check those out if you're further north! https://lnkd.in/e3ihKfaR?
