A new HERMES project paper on the exploitation of #renewable energy to #decarbonize #mobility, has been published! PSI Paul Scherrer Institut, an HERMES project partner, published a new study entitled “𝐂𝐨𝐦𝐩𝐫𝐞𝐡𝐞𝐧𝐬𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐚𝐧𝐚𝐥𝐲𝐬𝐢𝐬 𝐨𝐟 𝐫𝐞𝐧𝐞𝐰𝐚𝐛𝐥𝐞 𝐞𝐧𝐞𝐫𝐠𝐲 𝐢𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐠𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐢𝐧 𝐝𝐞𝐜𝐚𝐫𝐛𝐨𝐧𝐢𝐬𝐞𝐝 𝐦𝐨𝐛𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐲: 𝐋𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐚𝐠𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐩𝐨𝐰𝐞𝐫-𝐭𝐨-𝐗 𝐬𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐚𝐠𝐞 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡 𝐛𝐢𝐨𝐠𝐞𝐧𝐢𝐜 𝐜𝐚𝐫𝐛𝐨𝐧 𝐬𝐨𝐮𝐫𝐜𝐞𝐬”. In this study, the conceptual design of a system for delivering constant energy supply to a decarbonized urban mobility setting was conducted. Two systems were designed based on battery electric vehicles and fuel cell electric vehicles. The primary energy supply is renewable electricity, converted to H2 in an electrolyzer for fuel cell electric vehicles. Excess electricity is stored as methane or methanol, synthesized using CO2 from biogas upgrading. Technical performance indicators were calculated using data from the city of Zurich. Kudos to our colleague Hossein Madi!! The open access publication is here https://shorturl.at/CEodi #syntheticfuels; #methanol, #hydrogen, #syntheticmethane, #biogas, #CO2, #decarbonization

We are delighted that the Department for the Economy NI has launched a Call for Evidence on the development of biomethane production in Northern Ireland. The Minister’s launch of the Biomethane Call for Evidence follows a sustained period of focus from industry, academia, the Utility Regulator and policy makers to establish a detailed understanding of the scale of the biomethane opportunity locally and key learnings from established biomethane economies across Europe. We are particularly pleased that the Minister highlighted the importance of collaboration with the Department of Agriculture, Environment and Rural Affairs in developing a sustainable biomethane industry and in turn adding value across a number of key sectors locally. Last year, as part of the 5 Commitments to Net Zero made by the NI Gas Industry, we pledged to support the sustainable development of a biomethane industry that provides renewable energy solutions to NI customers and consider the Call for Evidence workstream and subsequent policy development to be critical in progressing this commitment. The call for evidence is available on the DfE website and will remain open for 12 weeks until 5pm on Friday 9 August 2024. Visit https://lnkd.in/eXcKyixs If you are considering responding to this Call for Evidence and would like to meet with one of our team to find out more about key workstreams that Gas Network Operators are advancing, please let us know. firmus energy Evolve

We know that the only way to achieve a truly Net Zero future, is to adopt new #sustainable fuel sources at scale. That is why we welcome the ‘Call for Evidence’ by the Department for the Economy NI on developing #biomethane production in NI. Decarbonising glass furnaces, which reach temperatures of 1,600 degrees, is no easy feat. Fossil fuels have been used for thousands of years to make glass. However, we see biomethane as a credible #alternative to fossil fuels in the production of container glass in Northern Ireland. It can be generated at a large scale from the strong #agricultural sector we have in the country, and using biomethane in Northern Ireland's modern gas grid needs to be a key part of plans for decarbonising energy. So let’s keep moving forward in our Zero Carbon journey!
