❓❓What is reading, exactly? It's something we do without much thought. Recent research has allowed us to "dumb down" the processes into a simpler format. ✨ Scarborough's Reading Rope is a great way to visualize what reading is comprised of. Language Comprehension and Word Recognition combine background knowledge of language and reading skills to make meaning from written language. As the two components become more automatic and strategic, they wind more tightly together, creating a skilled reader. Students who are beginning to learn must be explicitly taught each skill in order to wind them together. When a student is missing one or more elements of the rope, it cannot result in skilled reading. Thus, when a student is struggling to read, we can administer testing to see where the learning gaps are occurring, in order to fill those gaps and build the "reading rope." Are you struggling to figure out where your child's reading knowledge gaps are? Reach out today and we can complete diagnostic testing together! ---------- Photograph taken from: https://lnkd.in/g7SSZuq2

Join me today at the Accelerate Literacy Virtual Summit, for my talk on "Move from Reading Instruction to Language-literacy Development." Learn how to provide delayed and disinterested readers with a broader language experience - from sounds to sentences - to accelerate progress and provide much needed motivation. Learn how to create lessons that have students reading, spelling and writing multisyllabic words, phrases and sentences from day one. If you missed Mark Seidenberg or Devin Kearns talk they are still available. Mark talked about the balance between explicit instruction and implicit learning - how to quickly reach "escape velocity" in reading and not aim to fly readers all the way to the moon. https://lnkd.in/djPYjbD8

When I think about text structures, I have memories of middle school english class identifying 'cause and effect' vs. 'compare and contrast' stories and their recognizing features. Text structures can also be helpful in learning content concepts! In a science class, sometimes ideas can be difficult to wrap your brain around for the first time, think cellular respiration or rock formation. If the concept is presented as a story or timeline, students may be able to view the idea through a different lens, allowing for understanding! #GED7871
