Mindset Shift – Your Lifetime Skill Card #55

Today we look at #SettingGoals

…weighing #PrivateThoughts and #PublicContract.

Private thoughts make you go: “No one knows of my goals…”

Imagine the results: A list of to-dos in your mind, you resolve to complete them by the day’s end. But since they are private and intangible, possibly even insurmountable, no penalty set should you fail to finish… you find it easier to procrastinate, to surrender to the day’s distractions. Your dreams keep shifting, are extinguished or forgotten forever. And you continue, oblivious in your patterns, repeating the cycle for decades till death.

Public contract makes you go: “Everyone knows my goals so they can help out too!”

Imagine the results: Aware of how easy it is to be derailed by distractions, to be blaming busyness… you cut the excuses from the start, failure not an option. Announcing a clear goal to the crowd, you set real stakes that motivate you, developing accountability as many watch with judging eyes, as many pledge to support you. The pain of failing nags stronger than the siren call of temptations, and you achieve success in record time, your genius flowing at its best.

Simple thoughts like these can create a world of difference, a different timeline.

I used to pile my to-do list with every desire that hooked me, giving no limits for progress and results. Lacing any urgency to start, the outcome was a staggering heap of unfulfilled dreams, time and energy unutilised, my spirit demoralised. Stuck at rock bottom, I resolved to bounce back, never to return there.

By choosing to appreciate that setting stakes and boundaries can liberate the paralysis of choice, and incentivise the focus to succeed, I decided to play big. Goals reflected in a masterplan made known, gamified with incentives and penalties, I surged forth with combined fuel of pain and desire, even backed by those who were inspired to help. The outcome was a realisation that I could be better than what I had thought of myself, a game-changing mindset that can do wonders for well-being.

“One of life’s fundamental truths states, ‘ask and you shall receive’. As kids we get used to asking for things, but somehow we lose this ability in adulthood. We come up with all sorts of excuses and reasons to avoid any possibility of criticism or rejection.” – Jack Canfield
