Unemployed Job Seekers - How To Prove You Weren't Let Go For Average/Under Performance

Could employers view you, when you're unemployed, as an average or below average performer?


They might ... That largely depends on how you present yourself on your resume and interviews.


Ask yourself - In your resume and interviews, do you clearly prove success to employers?


Or instead, do you present yourself like most job seekers, as qualified but without proving success?


Most job seekers have been taught by career resources and most free job search content resume and interview strategies with the goal of appearing qualified (It's what most career coaches, outplacement advisors and resume writers have been taught in their certification training). That might be enough when you're the only qualified candidate.


But in 2024, you face many times more qualified competitors than interview spots, so the all the candidates the hiring manager sees are qualified. To the hiring manager, being qualified makes you average - That's not good for you, especially if you're unemployed.


Even if you were let go in a large layoff, it's natural for employers to be skeptical.


After all, layoffs are also used to fast-track terminations of average/under performers, none of whom want to present themselves as being let go for performance issues. So even when it really wasn't your fault, you likely describe your layoff/termination in similar ways as candidates when performance was the issue.


So rather than just say "It's not my fault", why not prove it?


You would if you had been taught how to prove success in your resume and interviews ... but remember, you've only been taught to present yourself as qualified (which to an employer means average).


And when employers have choices between many qualified candidates, they want the best, not an average and especially not a below average performer.
