South African Plastics Pact

Well Cape Town it's been magical, but after 10 days away from home it's time to leave. I've learnt and experienced loads whilst I have been here - was even playfully described as the 'Colonial poster-boy for wasters in SA'. Great to see the work that GreenCape, South African Plastics Pact and all its stakeholders are doing - safe to say I'm #inspired! Yesterday I had the pleasure in meeting and joining the African Reclaimers Organisation (ARO) in Khayelitsha to see how the informal sector works - I got my hands dirty, though I most likely just slowed them down more than I helped. Ahead of #INC5 in Busan later in the month it's key that the #JustTransition element of negotiations are not forgotten, without them doing what they do the global system doesn't work and they need more support. Naturally, it wouldn't have been a visit abroad without pictures of some #bins, so I hope my fellow wasters appreciate the ones at the top of Table Mountain. I hope I get the oppertunity to come back soon! What a great first few days in Cape Town at the South African Plastics Pact Member Conference! Congratulations to the GreenCape crew for a fantastic event and packed agenda. Feel like I've met so many infectiously passionate people already. Certainly didn't expect to travel this far to realise that a new contact would know the same people back in the UK - really is a small world and industry! Thank you for having me to give a, hopefully amusing and engaging, presentation on #PPWR during day 1, and giving me the oppertunity to #facilitate breakouts on day 2 - and thank you to all the members (particularly my breakout group) on being so open and engaged. Looking forward to the rest of my time here and getting to see and understand the intricacies of a very different #RecourceManagement system to what we have in the UK. Proceedings are underway for day two of the 2024 member conference convening business and supporting member organisations across the plastic packaging value chain. This engagement looks at amplifying our impact and building on investments for circular plastics in South Africa. We welcome WRAP and Polyco as presenters during the programme today.

We are excited to be hosting the 2024 member conference looking at working collaboratively to amplify our impact to build on investments for circular plastics in South Africa. We are hosting a Flexible Packaging Solution Showcase and Matchmaking event in partnership with the Anglo American Foundation in Johannesburg today (17/09). The focus of this event is on identifying alternatives for flexible multilayer multipolymer and flexible polypropylene packaging to boost plastic recycling in South Africa. Selected converters will present their market-ready solutions to South African Plastics Pact member companies across the value chain, as well as supporting members.

BREAKING! WRAP and the Ellen MacArthur Foundation have published a report which documents the impact from the past 6 years of the Plastics Pact Network. The report highlights that Plastic Pacts are a proven mechanism for delivering change at pace - providing a vital role in driving local, collaborative action around the world, informing and complementing national policy and a Global Plastics Treaty.   The report is supported by a document featuring a selection of case studies; powerful examples of the ways the Plastics Pacts are making an impact in their region.
