📣 Yesterday, we spent a wonderful afternoon and evening in Stade to celebrate 20 years of Composites United 🎉. It was our pleasure to meet with the composite "family" and hear about the first steps and early years of the network. Of course we were particularily proud about the crucial role our former director Axel Herrmann played in driving forward the CFK Valley in Stade, which was one of the two roots of the later CU. We thank Axel and his many companions that managed to forge this vibrant network from the scratch. And we are looking forward to the next 20 years!

It was a great year for EcoMat and we are proud to be part if this effective network!
ECOMAT General Meeting of the year 2024 The annual general meeting of our ECOMAT Association took place at our premises yesterday. Founded at the start of 2019, the members work closely together to provide new impetus for the aviation and space sector, expand research infrastructure, bundle areas of expertise and improve cooperation between industry, suppliers and the world of science. Among other things, the platform's activities include representing interest groups and network management, bundling areas of expertise or providing platforms for the exchange of information and a common public image under the umbrella brand ECOMAT. Together, we looked back on an exciting, versatile year with, to name a few, many successful R&D projects, the opening of ECOMAT‘s CRYOLAB, international cooperation with the region of Kobe, many events such as our ECOMAT breakfast series or the Hydrogen Technology Expo Europe and, as always, very good cooperation between all partners. Hubertus Lohner and Bastian Müller were re-elected to the Executive Board, and now form the Executive Board together with Dr.-Ing. Anastasiya Tönjes and Michel Siegfried Petkovic. We look forward to continuing our collaboration! Many thanks to all members of the association for the pleasant general meeting! Let’s go on 🛫🚀

Ein tolles Ergebnis der sehr schönen Zusammenarbeit zwischen Textechno, Fraunhofer IGCV und FIBRE. Wir danken den Partnern für die tolle Kooperation!
New ISO standard on interfacial shear strength! Fibre-reinforced composites rely on a matrix to evenly distribute loads across all fibres, with high interfacial shear strength being essential for effective load transfer. Traditionally, macromechanical tests were used to measure this strength; however, these tests are influenced by factors such as fibre content, diameter, orientation, and operator variability while producing test specimens. The recent release of ISO 19375 “Fibre-reinforced composites — Measurement of interfacial shear strength by means of a micromechanical single-fibre pullout test” overcomes these limitations by enabling precise measurement of pure fibre-to-matrix adhesion. FIMATEST, comprising the FIMABOND embedding station and the FAVIMAT+ single fibre tensile tester, is the first commercial system worldwide to measure fibre-to-matrix adhesion per ISO 19375 standards. This robust testing solution is ideal for manufacturers of reinforcement fibres, sizings, and matrices, as well as for research institutions. https://lnkd.in/eKp-FUYs

We’re thrilled to announce that our colleague Boris Marx has published a new reviewed article in Agricultural Engineering, addressing a key challenge in agriculture: finding sustainable alternatives to traditional plastics like polypropylene (PP) in bale twine. The alternative is based on induction welding of magnetic bicomponent fibers. Theanks Jan, for your constant efforts to push this important topic!
Autumn 2024 Review - The stage is yours! 👨🔬🔬 Over the past few weeks I have had the honour of sharing our latest insights into thermoplastic composite welding 🔥 at Faserinstitut Bremen and our industrial and scientific partners! On the 24th of September I gave a presentation at the MSE Congress 2024 in Darmstadt, Germany on "Development of a De-Welding on Demand Concept for Resistance Welding of GFR-PA6.6 for Controlled Disassembly and Repair". On behalf of my colleagues at FIBRE, namely Mika Ohler, Eike Jakob Krull and Lorenz Seeßelberg, I had the pleasure to give a presentation during the very multidisciplinary session of the LIGHTer PhD Network - Young researchers for lightweighting. The talk is available at: https://lnkd.in/eseuScJS On the 9th of October I gave a talk at the 7th ITHEC - International Conference and Exhibition on Thermoplastic Composites in Bremen, Germany. It was by far the biggest audience I have ever spoken to, but I really enjoyed it and got a lot of interest and valuable feedback. Thanks to Filipp Köhler & Bhanu Prakash (CTC GmbH) for the great support, also thanks to Udo Fritsching (Leibniz-Institut für Werkstofforientierte Technologien - IWT) for the nice assistance with recording the high speed video footage within the MAPEX University of Bremen network and a special thanks to my former mentor Axel Herrmann, who introduced me into the topic. The paper and presentation are available at: https://lnkd.in/eJ_HSPxa Finally, on the 22nd of October I was invited to speak at the Composites United Theme Day "Modelling & Simulation of Thermoplastic Composites" about our latest research on "Multi-physics simulation of ultrasonic welding - From frequency domain to time domain". We had very fruitful discussions about the modelling approaches and the difficulties in measuring and simulating the temperature evolution during ultrasonic welding. Thanks again to the whole Composite Technology Center / CTC GmbH (An Airbus Company) and especially to Lennart Finger and Dr. Tim Frerich for the fruitful discussion on material modelling of thermoplastic semi-crystalline high performance composites! The presentation can be found at: https://lnkd.in/ef_Vbcxw #composites #aerospace #aviation #simulation #modelling #lightweighting #thermoplastic
