An X user who expressed disappointment at not being properly addressed by a younger acquaintance is currently being roasted on Reddit. A Reddit user named Manufactured Reality shared a screenshot of an X user named Saket who ranted about how he felt disrespected by a young graduate who referred to him by name instead of any honourifics such as ‘Ji’ or ‘sir', on the popular subreddit Office Office.

“Call me old fashioned but I had connected with a young, fresh 2025 passout from my college when he sent a message on LinkedIn. His first message started with, Hi Saket, we are from the same college." And he lost me there itself. Son, you are 2025 pass out and address 1994 pass out with first name. I still address 1993 and earlier pass out as ‘Sir’. This Americanised culture,” read his post.

    Redditors Roast Saket

One Reddit user wrote, “He is following British culture and putting shade on American culture. Hypocrite!” Another pointed out that the practise of referring to strangers as 'Sir’ is no longer prevalent in the UK.

“Coming from someone who moved and works in the UK, this isn't even part of British culture. Yes, it's an honorific given to those knighted by the crown, but those titles are rare. It's the equivalent of meeting APJ Abdul Kalam or SRK on a regular basis. In most companies, you're expected to call people by their first name, "Dear James, etc." Some old-fashioned folk might expect you to refer to their surname. The only anecdotes where I've heard "sir" being used are with Indian middle management, overseeing a majority Indian workforce. The slave mindset is real.”

Another quipped, “What is this "sir"? It's either Jenaab or Prabhu ji you heathen!”

“One word—entitled asshole. The only people I call Sir are the ones who are to be addressed like that, e.g., a college professor , an army personnel (if I don’t know their ranks) , someone very old that I look up to and respect (but not directly related to this person), etc. read another comment.

One user, however, said they would agree to meet Saket half-way and refer to him as “Mr. Saket.”
