    Why is it, now more than ever, important to incorporate intersectional ecofeminism in climate disaster response? I am sure that , on the EU scale, we're all still processing not only that the European continent is the fastest warming continent on our planet, but also that floods, wildfires, and storms have become our reality. Recent disaster studies have been using intersectionality to understand how vulnerability changes over time and in different contexts (Urban, rural, etc.). The result, as expected, is that social inequalities are a key factor in determining people’s exposure to risk, their sensitivity to disasters, and their ability to recover from climate induced disasters. Vulnerability was also found to be not just an individual trait but is deeply shaped by social systems that maintain inequalities over time and across locations. This is why I am proud to lead this first of its kind workshop during the DialoguePerspectives.   • Since it's Black History Month, it's important to reflect on climate and energy justice globally through the lens of BIPOC communities. Navigating the world in a Black or any other non-Caucasian body often means facing systemic disadvantages, marginalization, and discrimination especially in predominantly white spaces. These inequities shape all aspects of life, from accessing healthcare and education to economic opportunities and even access to basic resources like energy. Across the globe, Black, Indigenous, and People of Colour (BIPOC) communities are disproportionately affected by environmental and social injustices, including energy poverty. As the world grapples with the dual crises of climate change and several enmeshed forms of inequality, the concept of energy justice has emerged as a crucial part of the conversation due to the need for a fair and inclusive transition to renewable energy.   • Did you know that the third Wednesday of October each year has been marking the International Pronouns Day since 2018? Navigating the English-speaking workplace as a trans non-binary person socialised as female can sometimes be overwhelming, as the burden of correcting, ignoring, and educating often falls on the shoulders of transgender and gender non-conforming employees. This is the time to reflect, is your workplace focusing on its internal practices and improvements before engaging externally under a marketing or fundraising umbrella? I know for sure that Qualcomm is! I had the opportunity to deliver a talk last week to employees across the EMEA region and I was impressed with the amount and nature of questions I received at the end. From uncertainties regarding coming out, to testing pronouns, to fear of dismissal, this particular talk made me realise that there is more of us- gender non-conforming folks- at your workplace than you think! It's just that some of us are loud and visible, while others are dealing with inner conflicts in silence. This is why, this is YOUR SIGN to do something about making sure that your work environment is safe and respectful for everyone, out or not. I remember when I first started using they/them pronouns and how scared and isolated I felt. There were no policies, workshops, or training programs for staff to learn about non-binary identities and pronouns. As a result, it took me two years to share my pronouns with my colleagues and supervisors. Two long years of being misgendered and feeling unseen, unheard, and dismissed. I did attempt to discuss the topic with some former colleagues, but the ridicule I faced made me stay in the closet at work longer than I should have. This is YOUR SIGN to educate your team. To raise the bar at your workplace and teach others to do better. Because at the end of the day, I believe that most people do the best they can with the knowledge they have, and it's the workplace's responsibility to make that knowledge accessible, so thank you Qualcomm for trusting me with this. #pronounsday #pronouns #EDI Dr. Asmae Ourkiya

After my experience in Morocco this month with a scary flood in my city that literally came out of nowhere, I decided to dig into this awesome recent publication that presents a hopeful model that helps predict inundations and human displacement in real time. Picture this: you’re curled up on your couch with a hot cup of tea (or driving home from the airport aka me a couple of weeks ago!), watching the rain gently tap on the window. It seems peaceful—until it’s not. Suddenly, that quiet drizzle becomes a downpour, the streets outside are turning into rivers, and before you know it, there’s a flood. It’s one of nature’s most powerful and unpredictable forces, worsened by climate change, and every year it claims the lives of many people, leaves millions of others displaced, destroys homes, and renders entire communities in a long struggle to recover from the damages. But floods aren’t just bad luck or accidents—they’re part of a larger story that’s getting more intense as our planet warms. With climate change in full swing, floods are becoming more frequent, more severe, and more widespread. In fact, the number of people exposed to floods and other natural disasters has been steadily climbing over the years. The worst part?     Alert: Exciting collaboration with the German Institute of Development and Sustainability (IDOS) I am thrilled to announce that next week, I will be leading an in-depth Climate Justice Workshop at the #MGG2024 Academy hosted by IDOS in Bonn, Germany. This workshop aims to deconstruct the concept of climate justice, situated at the nexus of environmental sustainability and social equity. With 21 participants from all over the world, our discussions will centre on the experiences of racialized communities as we navigate the complex landscape of contemporary global climate challenges, while simultaneously examining the systemic injustices that drive climate change. My objective, in my capacity as the founder of The Ecofeminist Institute and as a climate justice educator, is to reinforce intersectionality as an indispensable framework for decision-making. This is because I am a firm believer that in order to ensure just global climate governance, there is a need for an environment where empathy, critical reflection, and actionable insights thrive, and where multiple experiences are present at the table where decisions are made. This workshop will engage participants—who are already leaders and advanced professionals advocating for sustainability and climate equity and inclusivity. It aims to equip these brilliant minds with the necessary tools to address the root causes of climate change effectively, and continue the inspiring work they are leading in their home countries.     A little creativity keeps one's sanity (or mine, at least) 🤸♂️ 🌈 Last month, a poem I wrote for the Allesbien Festival was selected to be featured during the festival, which took place on the last weekend of July in Berlin. The theme centered around masculinities, with "dyke" as the spotlight word. When I walked into the venue, I was thrilled to see my poem, handwritten on a massive white sheet, hanging from a "castle"! It felt like a powerful declaration as I know I am not alone when it comes to owning both the enby and dyke* identities.
