About us

We’re working for a better city for people on bikes But more than that: we believe that more people on bikes makes for a better city. Call it a virtuous cycle. Bike Auckland mobilises people power for a better city on bikes. As the independent voice for cycling in Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland, we lead the push for positive change, on behalf of everyone who rides a bike in our city – and everyone who would love to give it a go.

  • We know cycling is good for us - our health, our communities, and our environment. But it's also good for business! 📈  The Cycling Works campaign shines a spotlight on how investing in cycling infrastructure benefits everyone - from local shops to the wider economy. 🌱 Why does cycling work for Tāmaki Makaurau? ✅ More cyclists = more foot traffic and customers for local businesses ✅ Safer streets = more people feel confident getting on their bikes ✅ Fewer cars on the road = reduced congestion and pollution ✅ Healthier people = a healthier city! Let’s make Auckland a city where cycling really works. • 59 bikes. 59 lives. Thousands left grieving. Each of these ghost bikes represents a person on a bike who has been killed in Aotearoa New Zealand in the last 5 years. In almost all cases, lower speed limits would have reduced the harm. Take a moment's silence to reflect on World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims 🕯️ With special thanks to the people who dreamt up and laboured on this art installation, to Greenpeace Aotearoa for their support, and to Brake (New Zealand) for their tireless work to make our roads safer. 📸 Simon Oosterman The full story 👇 https://lnkd.in/girqWy5s #ghostbike #artinstallation #tamakimakaurau #roaddeaths #speedrule #WDoR2024

  • The day of our Annual General Meeting is a great time to share our deep gratitude to all those who contributed in FY24 and those who are contributing in FY25. The Bike Auckland team felt a lot of aroha in the room today, and on the group ride which followed 💞 It takes a lot of work to put the AGM together - shout out to the organisers, presenters, including those who travelled to be with us, bike marshalls and of course, our fabulous Board, who all put their hands up to serve another term, and were unanimously voted in. Congratulations to all the Board Members, who give so much to Bike Auckland. Thanks also to Vibeke for capturing the AGM and group ride with photos and videos - this photo is her work 🙏

    • Thanks for an awesome AGM

  • Sunday 17 November is World Remembrance Day for Road Traffic Victims. An art installation of 59 white-painted ghost bikes will be in St Patrick’s Square in Auckland's city centre. 59 is the number of people who have died while riding bikes on the road in the last 5 years in Aotearoa NZ. Join us in St Patrick's Square as we reflect and pay our respects. We invite you to add flowers or bright coloured ribbons to the installation. Why are we doing this? Each of these 59 deaths had a ripple effect on whānau, friends, co-workers, schoolmates, the emergency services, the trauma teams at hospitals, the grief counsellors. Each of these bikes represents at least a hundred human beings whose lives were shattered in an instant. It doesn’t have to be like this.  Whatever the cause of a car crash, speed determines the harm. And, with safer speeds, much of that harm is avoidable.  Just like has been seen across the world, lower speed limits have been working in Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland. They have ensured 80 more people have made it home safely since they were implemented in 2020. But Minister for Transport Simeon Brown has passed a Speed Rule, forcing Councils across Aotearoa to increase speed limits to unsafe levels. His choice will create more harm on our roads, to our communities, to us. Sunday is a time to bear witness to what this increase will mean, and add your voice to those opposing the Speed Rule. #WDoR2024 #ghostbike #roadsafety #saferstreets #SpeedRule #dashtoacrash
