Thanks to Ali GhaffarianHoseini for sharing his reflections on aligning the future of #VocationalEducation with New Zealand’s #construction and #infrastructure needs. Ali shares insightful thoughts on: 🌍 Bridging the Gap Between Academia and Industry 📚 Tailored #Training and #Upskilling Opportunities 💡 #Innovation in Education 🤝 Collaboration for National #Impact Read Ali’s full post and join the discussion.
I recently had the privilege of interviewing with ConCOVE Tūhura #ConCOVE #Tūhura, Roger Smyth, a remarkable organization leading critical conversations about the future of #VocationalEducation and its alignment with New Zealand's #Construction and #Infrastructure needs. The discussion was deeply engaging, and it reinforced several key points close to my heart: 🌍 Bridging the Gap Between Academia and Industry: The need to better align #AcademicPrograms with #IndustryDemands was a recurring theme. We explored how vocational education often focuses on conventional principles while the industry rapidly adopts innovative technologies like #AI and #Automation. This gap calls for transformative changes in both #Curriculum and #TrainingMethods. 📚 Tailored Training and Upskilling Opportunities: One critical insight is the necessity of targeted #Upskilling opportunities, especially for #MidCareerProfessionals. Short-term, intensive training programs like #MicroCredentials can offer a practical, cost-effective solution to address current #SkillGaps without disrupting #IndustryProductivity. 💡 Innovation in Education: ConCOVE’s vision for vocational education resonates strongly with my own experiences at #AUT. Introducing specialized programs like #CarbonNeutralArchitecture or emphasizing evolved disciplines can ensure education remains relevant and impactful in addressing global challenges like #ClimateChange and #Sustainability. 🤝 Collaboration for National Impact: The conversation also highlighted the pressing need to align #NationalStrategies with #WorkforceTraining to meet ambitious goals like New Zealand’s #2050NetZeroTargets. This requires strong collaboration between #Academia, #Industry, and #Government to drive meaningful, measurable outcomes. I’m inspired by ConCOVE’s proactive role in shaping the future of vocational education and their commitment to addressing critical workforce challenges. ***Read the full article attached and join the conversation on shaping the future of education and workforce development.*** Suzanne Wilkinson Charles Walker Nicola Naismith Amir Ghaffarianhoseini AUT School of Future Environments Auckland University of Technology NZGBC Te Kāhui Whaihanga NZ Institute of Architects - Auckland Branch Smart Cities Council Dr Felix B Tan Mahdiar Ghaffarian New Zealand Qualifications Authority | Mana Tohu Mātauranga o Aotearoa MBIE Science and Innovation UNESCO-UNEVOC UNESCO Building and Construction Industry Training Organisation Beca Fletcher Construction Katherine Hall George Makapatama WARREN AND MAHONEY Fulton Hogan Hawkins Te Pūkenga Engineering New Zealand Te Ao Rangahau #VocationalEducation #Sustainability #Innovation #Upskilling #Collaboration #WorkforceDevelopment

The recent consultation on vocational education reforms gave ConCOVE the chance to share our vision for the wider sector. While the 1200+ proposals are under review by the Ministry of Education New Zealand and Tertiary Education Commission, we’ll be highlighting our future-focused thinking in this series of posts. A robust standard-setting and industry engagement framework is key to ensuring the relevance and quality of training. As part of ConCOVE’s vision for the VET reform, we’ve emphasised the importance of a dedicated standard-setting body to maintain high-quality, consistent training. We propose bringing industry needs and the standard-setting body function more closely aligned. Two key components: 1️⃣ Increased use of capstone assessment to evaluate holistic skills and bring industry closer to competence assessment. 2️⃣ A single standard-setting body across all industries. Learn more about our approach: https://lnkd.in/gsnEBHpg #VETReform #ConCOVE #VocationalExcellence #standardsetting

Earlier this week I was in Wellington with some of the Allen + Clarke team, Sean Stack, Georgia Jackson and Stuart Beresford, hosting a joint ConCOVE Tūhura webinar. We asked Allen + Clarke to investigate how the six conditions of system change impact on the training and support provided by training advisors to learners, and what training advisors need to be successful. The webinar had an impressive 170+ views and is also available online, requests for us to continue talking, and 25% of the audience engaging through an interaction or chat. I encourage you to read the report (link below) as the webinar only touched on some of the system-wide recommendations included. It's a big topic and a big report with lots to reflect and learn from. As always, we're up for questions so please reach out if you have any. Great to catch-up with Greg Durkin post webinar to explore this topic further. Also reassuring to know that this work is already being looked at in the context of improving VET delivery in Aotearoa New Zealand. While in Wellington I reflected on the importance of kanohi ki te kanohi connection. It really makes a ton of difference to the quality of the conversations I am having. Wellington folk, I am there often - let's catch up! More beautiful destinations across Aotearoa to visit soon too. https://lnkd.in/gUXVRq_s #constructionandinfrastructure #vocationaleducationandtraining #futureofwork

🌍 BILT Expert Group session at #AfricaSkillsWeek – 🔦 Spotlight on #RPL On Thursday last week, the #BILT Expert Group took over Tent 1 at ASW! To cover the complex topic of Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL), we had excellent speakers and panellists. They shared insights into RPL in Kenya and Ethiopia, and its impact on the informal sector and migration pathways. 👏 Special appreciation to… Nyamai Wambua, CEO of the Kenya National Federation of Jua Kali Asspciations, for highlighting how RPL bridges the gap between informal skills and formal qualifications, fostering mobility in the labour sector. Main motivations for candidates to opt for RPL became clear: ⚙️ entry into jobs in the formal sector, ⚙️ the possibility to take part in public procurement, and ⚙️ re-entry into the formal education system. Martha wolde, Ministry of Labour and Skills, Ethiopia, for adding the role of RPL in empowering workers migrating abroad. Three key aspects for RPL: 🧱 ensuring awareness among informal workers of RPL and of their opportunities, 🧱 addressing cultural and linguistic barriers for RPL candidates in a sensitive way, 🧱 addressing employers’ perceptions of RPL candidates. Amir Radfar, #UNHCR, for addressing the distinction between migrant and refugee challenges, urging for a push to advance RPL, especially as migration to developed countries is peaking, to make sure migrants get into formal jobs, decent work. Ngigi NJUGUNA, Don Bosco Tech Africa, for shedding light on how RPL enhances employability for marginalized communities and the potential of qualification-awarding institutions, as well as for underlining that DBTA is open to engage in knowledge sharing on the topic. The BILT Expert Group leads from Africa, Europe and Asia-Pacific: Tunji Adeniran, FNIOB, mni, Matteo Sgarzi, and Eve Price for excellent moderation. 🎊And to The Audience for sharing from their contexts, in Cameroon🇨🇲, in Nigeria🇳🇬, in Libya🇱🇾, in Sierra Leone🇸🇱 …, and for asking so many good questions in English and French. 🔥 Topics covered: - integrating RPL with the National Qualification Frameworks (NQF) and domesticating high-level guidelines into local standards, - financing RPL, - counselling & guidance for RPL candidates as well as special training for RPL assessors, - RPL assessment on the job and online, - candidates’ options for additional training, - the importance of regional collaboration (e.g. Kenya, Ethiopia, and Tanzania). ‼️The discussions reinforced the importance of RPL for developing more inclusive and flexible TVET systems and labour markets. 🌏We are ready to continue the conversation including Asia-Pacific and Europe. In our submission to the VET reform, ConCOVE proposes a reimagined provider structure that ensures comprehensive coverage and high-quality education across New Zealand. Our vision includes: 1️⃣ Large-scale anchor campuses for skill development and training 2️⃣ Regional training hubs to serve local communities and deliver initial exposure and work readiness. Coordinates Training Academies for early exposure. Coordinated with large-scale campuses for resource sharing. Provision for localised content. 3️⃣ Mobile training units for flexibility, ensuring training reaches remote areas and urgent industry projects. 4️⃣ Integrated Online Learning Platform to deliver theoretical components and support blended learning approaches. This structure balances centralised resources with local responsiveness, ensuring consistency and portability of qualifications while meeting diverse learner needs across regions. It’s a forward-looking model that will equip learners for future industry challenges. Read more about our proposal: https://lnkd.in/gsnEBHpg #VETReform #ConCOVE #VocationalExcellence
