"Reach audiences everywhere, period." Is CTV just digital video or a channel all its own? 🤔 Paul Calver sparks an interesting debate. ⬇ What's your take?
I was in the audience of VideoWeek's event last week and I keep coming back to a question that really stumped the panelists. "What is CTV?" Seems innocuous enough but considering the onslaught of acronyms that have popped up around "CTV" — AVoD, SVoD, PVoD, BVoD, Hybrid SVoD (most of which I had to look up to be honest!) — it's a meaty question in need of a straightforward answer. One panelist asserted CTV is simply digital video. The device or channel or mode of delivery matters little. I'd tend to agree on this point as the consumer makes no distinction between the video they're watching on their TV versus mobile versus laptop. On the other hand, the term CTV squares with how agency teams (and perhaps brands) silo their advertising budgets (e.g., fiefdoms). I'm of the mind that brands want to reach audiences everywhere, period the end. Which channel you address that audience on matters very little, especially if it works. And is CTV even a channel, or are we making things more complex than it needs to be? Curious where folks here stand. . . is it worth a larger debate?
